is it possible to have a "jump to first unread post" link within each thread, instead of only ones that span multiple pages?

What do you mean? If you click on the arrow next to the thread's name, it always takes you to the last unread post...

yep, in the list of threads for each section, if there has been a new post you will be given the "arrow" option. This won't appear if you have opened the thread before, only for brand new posts.
