How to remove light scratches? Thu, 04 March 2004 00:24 Go to next message
Hi guys,

what would be the best method of removing light scratches from the bonnet of the car? basicaly, there are 2 parallel lines that run down the bonnet, sustained from the buttons of the back of some jeans.......

The scratches are not deep, any recommendations of products or techniques?

This is over a Mica pearl paintjob

Thanks!

cut and polish?

when my dog tried to get a cat on the roof of my car, he scratched holy hell out of the driver's side door. a quick cut and polish seemed to clear it all up.

any other ideas?

yeah, if they're light scratches a cut & polish will probably get em out. You can pay to get it done professionally, or do it yourself if you've got the time.

Question is... HOW did the back of someone's jeans draw two *ahem* "parallel" lines *ahem* down the bonnet... Embarassed Evil or Very Mad

Hint: I carry a blanket in the boot, you can use it for ALL sorts of things, including scratch-prevention on the boot/bonnet/front quarter... Laughing

Meguiars Scratch X - $14.99 - get it a K-Mart/Autobarn/Supercheap

http://www.meguiars.com/store_meguiars/images/product_g103.gif

Quote:

ScratchX is the most effective way to remove fine scratches and swirls from automotive paint by hand. This product is guaranteed to deliver the finest results possible by hand (some scratches require removal by machine applied professional formulas). ScratchX removes surface contaminants, oxidation and blemishes as well as enhances paint color. Unlike many paint correction formulas on the market, ScratchX will not leave more scratches than it takes out. It's ideal for use as a quick touch up or to revive a car's entire finish.

DO NOT USE A BUFFER!

swirlmarks ahoy if you do.

buy the scratch x and at the same time 2 meguiars polishing towels for 10 bucks.

win.

Use a cutting compound (like the above mentioned) and do it by hand. just make sure the compund is all removed then wash car with a wash (not wash and wax, once again mequires has a "cleaner" that cleans old wax and chemicals from paint) then apply a wax and polish by hand. Takes eons the first time you do the car. but if you clean the car regularly using the right products in the right order it becomes easier. Check out the mequires site for their various products and their application to different cars, paints. Interesting stuff.

ok just applied 'scratch X' last night and it gave great results, the feel is awesome and it gets rid of minor blemishes (this sounds like a chic talkin about make up Rolling Eyes )

ANYWAY....the original 2 scratches caused by the jeans has only minorly scrubbed off, but it is still visible. But i will try the order you mentioned Garth, even if it doesn't get rid of it, the whole car can have a royal treatment Very Happy

BTW i also noticed last night, that there is a minor dent in the bonnet Rolling Eyes as well.....right at the top where the scratches start (basically on the top of the LHS windscreen washer)....the size of an open hand.

Do those suction things that you can purchase from autoshops work?

If not, anyone know some phone numbers of portable services that carry out this repair? I've seen some vans that specialise in this, but have never gotten the ph. number

thanks guys

Precisely what my car gets once a month. on top of that there is a spray on wipe off "buff" that removes that light layer of dust that seems to appear the day after you polish. I give my car the full wash once a month and clean it other weekend with the dust cleaner. if your car is light in colour you don't notice the dust as much.

i find that the "wax in a bottle" thing is pretty useless

wash+vacumn every weekend, full detail with polish/wax every second

des, if the 2 scratches are still visible you might need to clay the surface up and do it properly, some scratches are too deep to repair

the suction cups do work, but only for specific types, its its just been "popped" in, you can pop it out, but its its actually "bent" the metal, no chance

*shrugs*

i finally took matters in my own hands and beated the dent out with a mallet.....pretty dodgy, but it has made it less noticeable, might need a pro to touch it up.

as for the scratches, well. lets just say....i'll learn to wax in advance Very Happy
