k, I want to remould my carpets today... but I realised I have no idea really how to use the heat gun. any ideas on approximate length to keep it away from carpet so I dont burn my carpets, yet still make them mouldable?
(english language is failing me - sorry)

I would have thought that by trial and error you will work out which distance is too close or too far away?

that would be great, if I didn't mind scorching bits of my carpet when it gets too close

hmm maybe you could use a rag over the top so that direct heat is not getting the carpet?

Hey I didn't say I knew how to mould carpet, just that I had a heat gun in response to your request. In the future all responses will first be tested on another fabric surface, say a seat, prior to recommending.
I generally use it to form plastic and just trial and error, (you just don't want the error) so just try it about a foot away to start and see how it goes. Also use it from the rear, or the pile will definately melt.
Call if you want
