Your funniest car related blunder. Wed, 03 March 2004 17:58 Go to next message
Here's mine:

Blunder 1

Last summer I fixed my gasoline tank by welding. Tank had rusted very badly. There was at least dozen pin sized holes and you could make more by just blowing. Anyway I vented the tank for several hours and filled the tank with water before welding. I was welding this in front of garage. I did managed to weld most of the holes. Then I went for cup of coffee and when I came back to finish rest of the holes, I put mask back on and took mig-pistol (or what ever it's called) and pulled the trigger. In the very second of electric arc BOOM. You can guess what happened and I can tell you that I have never seen 65liters of water go thru 2" hole in less than 0.2seconds. Explosion spitted the water out so hard that the water flew about 7 meters and hitted in the wheelbarrows, that were sitting in the lawn. Wheelbarrows took off and flew/rolled in the bushes and thats something like 5 meters. I'm glad that the tank didn't splinter. Tank took off in the opposite direction of water jet. Tank hitted me and there I was sitting in my arse gasoline tank in my arms. There was two of my friends watching this parody. You cant believe how hard we laughed.

My mother had Sunny like this except it was station wagon and it missed that fully sick body kit. Anyway, I was driving it in really worn-out gravel road. All the sudden I almost hitted my head in the wind screen because car stopped really violently and I was like WTF? I jumped out and noticed that rear tires were ~30cm off the ground. After I leaned to look under the car, I saw that spare-tire and tire-rack had dropped and wedged between hole in the road and sunnys floor-pan. I did get off just by reversing a bit. The hinge was rusted off from the spare tire rack and cotter pin that should keep this thing up was SO stucked. So I started hitting it with shovel and that took ages. I already started to plan that I will reverse rest of the way(~10KM). Happy ending was that I did get the rack to fall off. As a mark of my win over the spare tire rack, I leaved the spare tire and the tire rack there Laughing .

Doing a auto to manual conversion on a friend's Escort and the starter motor dropped on my scone. I was out cold for 30 seconds, according to my friends. Anyway, I had a nice gash across my forehead so they took me in to hospital. A doctor very diligently ordered a CT of my head. It revealed air in the cranial vault, so theoretically I had sustained an open skull fracture. I was in hospital for a couple of days getting IV antibiotics. Parents were pissed off, mostly because the Esky was still in their garage. Laughing

I suppose you could call me an airhead. Very Happy

When I was pulling my front cut apart I disconnected a hose from the power-steering pump... or so I thought. Turns out it was actually one of the aircon hoses, and as the aircon system was fully charged I got a blast of gas directly in the face! I hope that stuff isn't too poisonous because I got a good lungful of it... talk about a shock though, I must have jumped back a good couple of metres! Laughing

hehehehe norbs - i too have undone a fully loaded aircon line by mistake!! kaboom - face full of shitty oil!

my biggest blunder: lying under an old jeep i once owned, and i was removing what i thought was a rear underbody splash gaurd (needed to have a look at the transfer case shifter mount)... anyway, just as the last bolt undid, i learnt that the splash gaurd was also the gearbox/t-case x-member and rear engine mount and had the whole lot fall and pin me under the car...

was screaming until the old man stuck his head outside, realised what was going on and went and fetched the jack

when i did my first engine conversion, the problem of 1 bolt on the bell housing of the 4ac caused no end of greif, after soaking with wd40, rounding the head of the bolt, bashing on a smaller spanner, using extension bars of differing lengths, i still had no luck, after wasting 3 hours i gave up and called a friend, after a furthur hour, my fiance offers the great bit of wisdom "are you turning it the right way?",....2 minutes later the engine and gearbox were appart..........

I once changed a old commodore from auto to manual and i put a switch in where the neutral safety switch used to be to act as like a kill switch. Then i stopped one day came out and the car wouldnt start . For weeks i had to cross the starter motor at the terminals to get car to run. I changed starter motors and everything. After about three weeks of doing this my g/f finally decides to remind me that the switch is most likely off. After a quick flip of the switch. NO MORE PROBLEMS. Very Happy

About 18months ago I was heading down to the 2002 Sydney Motorshow when I broke down on the freeway. My own stupid fault the car had no oil. So I ended up calling a towtruck to tow my car home.
On the ride home the tow truck breaks down on the freeway with a flat tyre. For some stupid reason the tow truck didn't have a spare tyre and ended up having to call another tow truck for a replacement tyre.
At this stage I could only laugh with the days event. Ended up originally having to wait nearly an hour for the first tow truck and then nearly another hour to wait for the second tow truck.
Eventually I made it to Sydney to see the Motor Show that year.

At work removing a bull bar off a new Prado... I was standing infront of the car while one dude was undoing the last bolt and another holding the bar... The bolt comes undone, other dude lets go to grab a spanner, I turn to look for the spanner, complete bullbar hits my head and takes me to the ground... (car was on the hoist at full height)... I wake up a few mins later upstairs in the lunch room, laying on the lounge...
Just a Buldge on my head for the next week and I was ok...

At home, removing driveshafts from my brothers Charade, one was stuck and I got underneath it to lever it out and pop, it comes out and smack, lands on my forehead cause my brother decides to let go of it...

Lesson learned: Do not trust anyone holding anything...

My cousin was changing a starter motor in his car one day before a cruse in to the city, so we are crusing down the M4 when his starter motor falls out smashing through my front end and ending up in my radiator.

my ones rather old and stupid but its the stupidest thing thats happenned to me with a car.
remember that fake blood stuff you could buy that looks exactly like real blood... I was 13 at the time, i smeared that all over the tops of my fingers to pretend when mum closed the hood of her car that she got my fingers and i was bleeding.. so i was leaning over with my hands on the inside of where the hood would be and didnt suspect that she was closing the fucking thing.. she slams it down breaks 2 of my fingers and cuts every one of them open like a bitch... so much for my little gag.. now real blood was running all down my hands once i got the fingers out.
my maet just laughed cause he thought my joke had worked... until he saw me bawling my eyes out

We put a webber carby into a mates gemi, he got the carby from a 'mate' who had 'reconditioned it'. As it turns out he left out several key gaskets...car was running fine, then boom fuel and fire everwhere.

That was cool, but then another friend made the wise decison to try and smother the fire with a newspaper, when this caught on fire he threw it, and it landed in my mates garage, near a whole bunch of paint...I put out the newspaper by stamping it out, luckily no damage done, and the guy who owned the car put out the engine fire with a wet blanket. We then proceeded to bash newspaper boy for being utterly stupid!!

30 seconds of madness tho.

we had a sportage at work on the hoist, we were pulling the box out, we had the box most of the way out but had the back of it supported with a big rod.
they techs went to lunch and halfway thru "BANG", the hoist had slowly dropped and was being held up by the back 2 supports and the rod, the rod launched out and the car dropped back onto 1 of the front supports, now the car was teetering between the 2 back/1 front and 1 back/1front, about 2m above the ground, so we got a few techs to lift the front and put the hoist back under.

scary

also at my work b4 i started we had a similar thing happen, we didnt have enuff room to put all the cars one night, so we put a pajero on one hoist, raised it up and parked another car under it, came to work the next day to find the pajero sitting on its guts on top of a magna Confused

We were taking this down in awful hurry!
http://toyotacover.50megs.com/sekalaiset/P1010046. jpg

And there were only me my friend and no good little bottle jack. So we decided to put couple tires under the jack and lift from middle of rear axle. We only did get rear of the car only slightly lighten. So my friend suggest that if he lifted from rear guard and I take one tire off from one side and then we would change to the other side. This felt like a good idea. But the practise showed otherwise. When my friend lifted from the rear guard, jack stumbled. Tire piles fell off and jack flew to wall at horrendous speed. Thank god it didnt hit us. Luckily we did put tires on that Corona so no damage was happened. After 15 seconds of silent horror my friend calmly and plainly said "and it's down". We laughed this when we did realize what happened.

ok this is not my blunder but my brothers. The oil feed line to the turbo was corroded and had a hole in it so instead of replacing it cut out the bad section and replaced it with rubber fuel line hose and hose clamps. He then drove to castle towers (huge shopping centre) and once he got to the carpark the rubber hose gave way and let hot oil spill everywhere causing a shit load of smoke. this set the alarms off and stacks of people started exiting the building thinking it was an evacuation for a real fire. the fire trucks came to help move his car and clean up the oil.

during the automotive tafe course i attended,
we were doing a practical lesson to go out to the workshop and just to do a simple job of changing a tyres.

after the teacher had told us what to do we all went to a car each and put it on a jack etc...

while one side (rear) the car is held up, we're meant to take bolts from the rims with an air rachet to take the tyre off... so we did...

but there was this one guy, who had to work on a car with a hub cap to cover the steel rims - which he didnt notice it was a hub cap...

so im there, working on my assinged car, and all i hear is "CRRAAACCKK" - with the sound of the air rachet.
and i turn around and there he was with the air rachet in his hand with the shattered hub cap.

Laughing
