Neons !

Are they defectable in Sydney ?
I kinda like neons... My mate just came back from NZ and told me that because of different defect rules, neons are legal !!
Anywho, neons are the IN THING there !! The cars look like they are out of Fast & Furious heheheh (yes yes rice)
I think neon suits some cars and I think they are pretty cool. However I do not recommend them on older style cars.
Ps all the cars with neons in Syd that I have seen suckass

Yeah, in the footwells would be cool when the internal light is on.
I'm interested to know if external neons and washer jet lights are defectable in Victoria.
I don't want those jet lights myself, but I see a lot of them about, so I'm just curious. I may however get under car neons at some point... you know, after getting a good car.

Im not sure wether its defectable in NSW, but i have been pulled over and given a warning, being told that "the only lights on a car can be yellow or white", anyway i belive the is a fine involved. However having said this if all you are doing is putting neons in your foot well, then it shouldn't be noticable. Basicly you are find to have them on when the car is stoped, but when ur moving its at your own risk.

yeah i dont mind neons. i had them in my sub box, eq and amp enclosure, under the dash in the foot well (which is prity cool when driving around, (doesnt glow in your face at all), mine where all red. i should get them all back in soon seeing our sound-off season is starting again.
i am sure i even left a couple small ones under the car somewhere.....

i have blue neons in the footwells, and i have been told to keep them off whilst driving due to the distraction (and its true! nearly had an accident when i got them! learnt that one quick)
mine are just activated by a switch i installed to one of those spare plates near the steering wheel and coin change holder thingy.
considering taking them out thou since i hardley use them, might put them in the computer case instead, if they'll fit (over 40cm i think)

Yep i have to agree blue neons that light up the footwells is a nice look, however i'm a tad partial to them going underneath a car... as for legality i'm pretty sure its DAMN illegal coz you get sunday drivers distracted by your pretty lights and they end up running over little johnny.

From what I understand I think it is the colour of the neon that causes the problem rather than the neons themselves (externally) from my point of view, if your improving the visability of you car after dark what is the problem as long as your not blinding other road user (which neons don't) I think however the only colour you can use is white (and possibly Black Light) as most other colours have a designation on the road. (ie blue - emergency services, red - brakes, orange - indicators, I think in some states green is emergency services as well as go lights.) This goes for the washer lights as well as they are generally red, blue or green.
I think the last rule I read on the subject stated that one can have neons fitted but only can only be on when the vehicle is stationary and the motor not running.

Dude, you want to be careful with neons as lights. I have a green neon in my room above my blind so it just lights the room up green. I had it on one night while I was in there for a few hours, then I went outside and literally everything was this blood red. I thought I had stuffed my eyes totally. Took them about 20 mins to get back to normal. Talk about a weird experience. After that I dont want neons where I can see them. But I will have some below my car.

In my Cressida there is a deep pocket in the front doors for maps or papers and stuff. If you put neons in those they look awesome.
You just see the glow of the neon on the side of the door lining right up to the armrest/doorhandle. It looks cool and is not glarey like some othe locations.
They are easy to wire up too because the doors already have little red lights in the corners that you could tack a wire onto.

The GT4 doesn't need em. It looks awesome already. It doesn't need makeup to look good.

the untouchable has squirter neons on his sa63- cops pulled him over (one headlight) and he asked whether they were illegal.
the cop (and a particularly arseholeish one at that) said no- only if they are 'blinding' or 'dazzling'
so there ya go-
and draven-
my footwell light in my ma61 is stuffed- its on all the time, and it looks pretty damn cool. i actually dont mind a coloured interior globe, and maybe a glovebox light?
bit of fun, i guess.

What about in the engine bay? Ive got a blue top ae82 corolla and i now have a spare wire and switch where my driving lights are no more because i put a AE92 bar on.
Im pretty sure it will be illegal to have them on whilst driving though im not 100% sure. As it would distract other drivers but look cool coming out the twincam grille.

my mates got deffected in a car park, with the motor off, sitting stationary, because he had neons on, one car had blue. another purple. another green
im gunna put neons under and inside the new car. and have them turn on when the car door opens. plus a seperate switch to turn em on when the door is closed.
the new car is black, and its going to use blue lights.

On a side note to this topic. I did a search to find a legal rule on this and couldn't find one the only way I guess to find out would be to interpret the ADR's and get somthing out of that.
and on that the last time I checked I beleive the rules for side indicators was that they had to be visible from the rear side of the vehicle and no nore than 600mm from the road. Front and rear indicators the same. that would make the indicators in the Merc's rear vision mirrors non-ADR compliant and therefore illegal?
Somthing to ponder...

I think they would look awesome. Awesome cars are the only ones that should have neons. Clapped out dirty VNs with rice rims and neons just crappy IMHO.
But I dunno how legal they are. Green isn't anything other than stop lights in Victoria so perhaps we are allowed green?
I'll have to see if I have any friends who know road cops... or whatever they are called.

Anyway girls, blue light is illegal, it's reserved for emergency services only. You can and will get defected for them. I've told many people that, those that don't listen end up finding out the hard way.

well u dotn screw into the floor at all.. cause u put them right up the back in the very bottom of ur dash and try to make the tube completely invisible from eye from anywhere in the car unless u stick ur head down there.
Drill little holes and screw them in.
9 inch neon are enough and light up my whole car.. and thats without even being able to see the tube...
tube being visible looks tacky and makes it too bright/distacting for the eyes.

FWIW Neons are perfectly legal in WA
As long as you can't see the tube, and they don't flash, pulse, what have you.
I'm still trying to get my hands on the form that you put into your car so that if a cop tries to sticker you for them, you can show him that.

there's a topic about this elsewhere (prob about washer leds) but a number of people advised that the forward facing lights on a car can be white (park or headlight) or orange (indicator).
red & blue are reserved for emergency services (fire, ambo, police) plus i've noticed that ranger's cars in national parks have green. There's also pilot lights (colour unknown) for cars leading large vehicles but they tend to use the cops these days.
but all this is academic, i'm sure that there's an ADR that says crapola imports like hyundai and neon should only be driven in carparks by learner drivers..

geez, that a lot of red lights for the inside/outside of one car? and none of them are brake or tail lights?
seriously tho - with all that glare, if you hit someone/thing at night, it'd be a fair call for the cops to say you were distracted/affected by the glare of your own lights therefore you might contribute to an accident..
...personally, i hate glare from poorly adjusted lights and them stupid driving/fog lamps that people use when its nighttime ... your lights, i'm afraid, would only add to that optical pollution.

well from what i heard in wa you can use neons but not certain colors like blue and red since there emergency veicle lights.
But still they look cool but they are a distraction cause if your drive along and see a car with neons under the car your gonna look.
Otherwise if you wanna know just go to a police station and ask but they'll proberly tell you there illegal just to annoy you
