I didn't think Toyota's current version of vvti had a "switch-over" point... Confused I was under the assumption it was continuously altering it, and it's only the vvtLi ones that will have a big kick when they change the lift.

I don't know what type the echos have. But I used to drive the dominos echo and it felt like a switch over sort of thing at about 3500rpm.

BTW I beat a non turbo sr20 silvia in that thing to 100km! he wasn't happy Smile

The intake cam timing on the VVTi engine is continuosly variable and the amount of advance is controlled by the ECU. As others have said it seems to be most noticeable above around 3000RPM. In the VVTl-i engine as well as the variable intake cam timing there is a second set of high lift/duration cam lobes on both the intake and exhaust cams which are engaged at about 6200RPM. The changeover to the high lift cams is quite dramatic and feels similar to a turbo coming on boost.

The 1ZZ is a great engine for what it is designed for... A fuel economical engine with good low down torque for the vanilla model corollas. As for kick...pfft it doesn't have any. It is a very flat engine when you wind it out. It has no definite kick anywhere in the rev range, unlike a 2ZZ. It also isn't very smooth at higher revs and is very buzzy and fatigueing to drive long distances on the highway.
After putting up with it for 18 months, I talked my wife into selling hers, paying out the loan and buying an older seca sx. It goes harder and is much smoother on the highway. It also is a much nicer car to drive. Doesn't feel like your driving a minivan.

I would like to see some dyno figures of a stock 1ZZ corolla because they certainly don't feel like 100kw to me. On paper they should go harder than the sx due to same power/weight but more torque. On the road its a completely different story.

Binny, interesting, was your wifes an auto or manual? 'Cause i've heard the autos aren't that great. Also back to my original point i've had some questions over the older models (yours was an '02 wasn't it?) so maybe the ECU mapping has been slighlty altered at some point...

As for you comment about the vanilla 'rollas, it was also fitted to the MR2. But i'd guess the power/weight ratio would definately be in the MR2's favour!

justcallmefrank, yeah that's what I thought, continously variable timing. Though in practice it doesn't feel like it, I get a definate switch-over at a certain rpm...

I'd commit suicide being beaten by a domino's car

A v6 what? Prado? Razz
And dragging an astra is a real achievement. Rolling Eyes
And all while getting the same fuel economy as a Prius.
That must be one very special Corolla you have there. Laughing
