$1200 and a wander through my back shed will see you pretty successful in picking one up too!

ok, ive had a look and your estimates about pricing were fairly spot on although there was a 3S-GTE for $1,650 from adelaide jap dismantlers. The next question is, will any 3S-GTE fit into my SV21 without much fuss or is there a specific year/model/generation that i should be looking for?

My back shed is in my backyard, and I only have Gen 2/ST185 Celica motors!

dude, now that question has been covered before, any 3s/5s motor is interchangeable, and any s series gearbox/and some e series will fit onto a 3s/5s

thanks heaps for the website man, its got a lot of useful info. My next question is, which gen is the easiest to convert and is it worth going to the extra effort to buy and install a more powerful gen. For example, i have heard that a popular choice is the ST165 engine because it installs without much fuss, but would it be worth sourcing and installing a ST205 for the extra power or would it just be a massive pain in the ass. thanks again for your help

they'll all be difficult to convert. Alot of people go st165 cause they put it in an st162 so hence the looms mate up, engine bay has all the necessay bracket holes cause they are the same front end. an ST185 gen2 would be alright for what you want. An st205 gen 3 would be good but, to much cost and hassle, especially since your only putting it in a camry, do you really want to keep the car for that long??? you'd have all the usual conversion problems when putting a non standard engine in a car. Try PM or email a guy on here called turbocamry he put a 3sgte gen2 in his camry (wide body one though)
