None! That's one good thing about Canberra.

3 big sweeping turns/on ramps
1 huge roundabout
1 traffic light

This is in about 10-15 minutes of driving BTW...

none for me either! Smile
although heading over to a friend's house, who lives 5 minutes away, I have to go over 11 (but 5 of those are ones that I regularly hit at 80+km/hr .. they're more like a slight rise in the road)

I remember the days when I didn't slow down for speed humps..

Now, maximum speed for speed humps is 40km/h. Unless I want to be cut into three pieces by my seatbelt...

I went over some on the way to school today.
I wouldn't even call them Speed bumps more like a rise in the road. You can do like 80 over them except on the days that the rubbish bins are out.

The main culprit seems to be Marrickville council. I mean, speed humps on a quiet back road I can understand, but speed humps at traffic lights on the main road? Thats taking it too far...

I remember coming down through Marrickville, didn't see the hump 'coz all the paint had faded away. Hit it at 60km/h in my car.... Ouch that hurt!!!

I never understood the reason for speed humps at traffic lights. Disgusted

To all you guys out there that hate them. Sorry, but Tough!
I have to slow down to crawl over them too.
But, I'm also one of the "Council bastards" who builds them.
Try looking at an accident site where a small kid has been wiped out by a speeding car on a residential street.
We don't build them for the looks.
Also, if you've got to go over 18 of them to go to work, find another route or accept it.
I know people don't like them, me included, but try to see it from another point of view.

Steve, would you take it personally if I gave you a kick next time I see you?

heheh

Joke. Rolling

Honestly though, since you'd be in the best position to answer it. How do you explain the speed hump at the traffic lights thing...

Placing speed humps around school areas and (maybe) residential areas is one thing, but placing them on a main street? Come on, if a pedestrian gets hit by a car crossing the road, it's their own bloody fault!

On a similar subject, there are 24h school zones here in Canberra! Ridiculous, especially when it's around a high school!

Depends on where it is. Are the traffic lights right in the middle of a main shopping area?
If so, its generally done to promote a more pedestrian friendly environment without actually creating a mall.

As for the kick, why do you think the orange road vests we wear have a cross on the back?
It's so there's something to aim at!

It's at the start/end of the shopping area.
It's really annoying when the lights turn orange and you floor it, then have to slam on the brakes.....

Hey, cool! Can you wear the vest to the next ToyMods meeting?!?!? hehehe

Blacktown TAFE is a bit of a bastard for speed humps. Driving in, you've got a couple of the metal ones that you have to come to an almost complete stop to go over. When you get in it's all good, Just a couple of those broad gradual ones. As you go to park in the automotive section, they've got about three really sharp, high bumps. Being mechanics and what not, we're more likely to have cars that sit lower than normal, so I reckon they do it just to piss us off.

The ones I go over have a recomended speed of 25km/h....I take them at 2km/h and still scrape like a bitch. They are killers. Why have them sooooo big??

Has anyone read the story abou Sonicanimation in the new SPEED magazine? The guy from that band lived in the UK and worked at a car rental place and they had a few hundred meter straight and they tried to see how fast they could go down it and then after a while the company put in some speed humps....that just made them drive even faster and tried to jump from one to the other. That would be damn good fun!!

You guys think you have it bad! i have to go over two speed humps at Lake Ginninderra College every day getting into the carpark and then on the way out. The thing is however, nomatter how much i slip the clutch, and no matter how diagonal i go over them, my car not only scrapes the exhaust tip along the ground, it scrapes the WHOLE exhaust all along the speed bump the whole leng of the bump. As well as this, the jacking points (those seam bits that run down the side of the car) are all completely flat and level with the undercarriage of the car, and there are several trails of oil after the bumps where my sump has had enough and has started leaking as i drive off. ALL of this infront of the whole school, all my friends, all the teachers, all the chicks, infront of everyone and when i drive off with oil leaking out from under my car it's one of the most embarrasing things you can do! I have gone through 3 sumps and 5 exhausts in the 1 3/4 years of going to the stupid school. My car is currently in the process of getting a metal plate wealded onto the 5th exhaust after a hole has been scraped onto it over 10cm long. i am sick of buying new exhausts all the time, even though they are only around $20 each, they are too thin and wear through to quickly. Admittedly the school's speed humps aren't the only ones i go over on a regular basis, but if they were only 5-6 cm shorter, they wouldn't pose such a big problem. And i'm not the only one either, there are heaps of modified cars that go to my school and everyone scrapes on them. It has come to a point now where people deliberately do burnouts on them to eat away at the soft tar mix so as to shorten the hump! just go there and take a look at the mauled-up humps, it's a sight to see!

HAHA, true true. But i'm getting some new 18's soon (as opposed to the 17's) so it'll be slightly higher but not by much. When i first started going there at the start of 2001 it was shocking! My car actually bellied out and i got stuck! It was the most embarrassing day of my life and me and my friends couldn't push it off and a teacher ended up helping us get it off!!!!!!! Laughing
But since then my jacking points have been completely squared off, the bumps have been eaten away, and i have fitted 17's instead of the 13's that were on it at the time. All i need really is to get a dry sump arrangement going and work out how to lift the exhaust up higher and it should be OK. I will definately still have to go diagonal cause if i nudge up to the bump stright-on the front of the car just below the bumper hits it straight away, even with the short front overhang of the TA22. But the exhaust will always scrape because it is so low that when it scrapes the speed bump pushes it up so hard that sometimes it pops off the rubber exhaust mounts!!!!!! Hopefully the extra few mm from the 18's will avoid the sump hitting the bump so hard, it actually stops the car if i go too slow.

Yeah i thought about the whole jacking the car up thing, never cared for it Laughing I've only got a few more months there and i'm out so there's no point doing it now! I think i'm going to start hacking at my parents driveway on the weekend too because that also contributes to my utterly short sump and exhaust mileage! If you turn into the entrance to the Lake Ginninderra College carpark (the one after the turn where makkas is on your right) then go straight over the two speed bumps, the right-hand turn after the second bump is covered with a fat trail of oil, that's mine! the sump somehow kept most of the oil in directly after the bump then 3 metres after dumped it all over the road infront of everyone! ehe, whaddaya gonna do.

Are those air suspensions that American lowriders use legal? I think posh cars like the Rangerover and Lexus have them. You can have a low ride but clear speed bumps as well. If you wanted to go full rice you could link it up to your stereo and make your car "dance" with the music.

Airbag systems are legal in Australia (with engineers of course) but actual "hydraulic" systems are definately illegal. I know because i know a guy that lives in the next street from me with a '67 Impala with Hydraulics and he is constantly running from the law to avoid having to rip out the whole system after getting defected. I pay anywhere from free to $50 for my exhausts. Most i get for free off this guy that wrecks them in canberra, but if he's out i have to go to the wreckers sometimes and i'm always arguing with them about their ridiculous price tags but seldom win! I'm also talking about the rear section of the TA22 exhuast system that includes the rear muffler down to the flange in the middle of the car, not the whole system. Luckly only the part after the flang is what gets damaged most of the time. I've only replaced the part before it twice.

Yes, I hate speed humps.

In the area's that they are, they are only there for the 'yuppie looks' of the area, and not for any practical means.

Yes, I'm talking about those things that have all those pretty flower beds next to them, as well as being a hump, they are also a bottleneck, narrowing the street to one lane.

I hate those tall ones too. Even my car at stock height scrapes the bastard things.

The only 'limiter' things I like are the salomes (spelling?). I enjoy throwing the car around those things. Very Happy Nice 60km/h twistie on the street.
