basically a week off an on - so - 40-50hrs i'd reckon on prepwork which including sanding and spraying and sanding and bogging and whatever else have you.
mandatory to have a shed to do this in. and have a good think about what you have to do - its a shload of work (if you want a good result)

i was thinking more than 50hrs. ive been getting a lot of advice from my dads mate who has restored alfa romeo sprints and is currently doing a maserati merak.
once the paint is on and fully cured, he uses BRASSO (yes the metal cleaner stuff) and spends about a week rubbing down one section after another followed by a polish to get the paint in concourse condition.
i'll try this on a section of my car and let you know how it goes if youd like to get your paint looking top dollar.

could be tommo but, i've been at it off and on so its only a guestimate and remember thats only the body section. i still have the boot, bonnet, 2 doors, beaver panel and 1 guard to do!
brasso - havent heard of that before....remembering my paint is acrylic and not 2 pack...

twincam_ke20, nah the tree has been there since i got the car (like 2 years ago) so hasn't done two tenths of fuck all for a long time
and yeah the clear is on the photos don't do it justice. its still yet to be compounded too. remember that the VT is 2 pac - this is only acrylic
stu, yeah no worries, go for a run around the otways you reckon - gotta reckon thats be on the cards, just, kinda gotta wait for mr bb turbo to get on there first and get some tuning happening and intercooling plumbing plus rest of paint the list goes on and on....
speaking of which whats with this shitty melbourne weather...not good days for painting/body work let me tell ya!

Gotta say, it's good to see some results on this car, I might even actually have to drop over one day and look at it in the flesh. Now the next challenge - whose car will be 'done' first, yours or mine (and yes, I know a car is NEVER 'done'!)

Hey Grega,
Dude would you consider writing a kinda "tech" document on the steps of painting panels.
I have to do the same thing as you to a mates car, but on loose panels.
I have the basic idea, but if you wanted to bullet point say 10 required steps that would be sweet. Basically painting an already painted car for a decent finish. Not talking perfect her, just factory.

painting, already painted panels, well, if you're sticking with the original color, i'd ;
1. rub back with 800 grit (dry) make sure surface is clean and smoothe, no crows feet, ripples ect
2. not necessary, but, hit with hi-fill to smooth things out and fill little holes/issues
3. sand that back with 800 grit dry
4. hit with two coats of primer (let dry) - apply dust coat of shitty $2 spray (black) - then sand them back with 1200 wet - get nice and smooth
5. apply final coat - 4-5 coats normally makes good coverage and gets everything. be careful with sills. they are low and if the car is too you WILL miss bits. i did
6. if its metallic, don't rub it back. if its a flat color, rub back wet with 2000 grit. apply clear.
7. leave for a while (1-2 months) to let cure, then compound.
bear in mind prior to applying the next coat of paint, to make sure that ALL dust is removed (use wet rag then air compressor to dry) and before final coats of paint remember PREPSOL is your friend.
also get yourself a couple of tack rags to remove dust. very very handy things to have.

never use sandpaper dry as it gets clogged and will scratch you surface then show up on the painted surface.
hi-fill is primer i dont know why you put another primer over the top.
sand hi-fill back once black guide coat is on rub it back with 400grit wet then do a light guide coat and then rub it back with 800grit wet making sure all the 400grit scratches are removed because paint fills 800grit scracthes.
paint the basecoat colour in nice light coats.
wait till dry the apply clear in 2 dry coats then one big wet coat.
wait till dry (16hrs 2pak) then you can cut and polish or do what ever you want....
need any other help with painting just ask...
cheers fellas

Make sure the rag is like a 'lint free' type of cloth otherwise it'll screw things up. Always use a block when sanding too.
If you can get a hold of one, grab a blower heater or something of the sort to cure panels. But don't use it if there is lots of dust around that will get stirred up by the heater!
Also - sometimes when spraying it's a good idea to wet the ground around the area that you are spraying, helps to keep the levels of airborn dust down.
Just some tips...

cool, thanks for the other input too guys.
i've found that the coverage of the hi fill actually isn't that great, so, i primed on top to make sure it was a smooth even finish - found it worked quite well actually.
agree with the dry sanding yes the paper gets clogged.
and yes definately lint free. cheesecloth works good here.
a blower heater is a bad idea - it will blow dust onto your work - better to use halogen lights (39.95 at bunnings)
also - wet the ground BUT make sure that the ground is dry as the water will cause humidity...

Good point about the halogen lights...
If you are spraying in a dusty environ - then yeah blower heater isn't good, but chances are that you probably will get alot of dust on the paint job regardless of the blower heater or not (if it is that dusty). It doesn't take alot of force for dust to get airborn and float around the place.

always use a block and use long strokes to rub the whole panel evenly when rubbing hi-fill or primer back.

I have been told gravity feed is not as good if you are a beginner and that you will end up spilling paint and that you really won't notice *that* much of a difference unless you are like a professional..

yeah you spill abit of paint when its full and your unsteady but you can just half fill the pot on the gun and she will be sweet, well there not much difference in the finish its just easier to spray engine bays, under the sills and any other awkward place... trust me there much better...
cheers
