the ECU needs signals from the AFM and the TPS on the throttle body to calculate correct fueling for the engine ... as well as air and coolant tempreture - along with an ignition signal to work out RPM.

i'd stop trying to run the motor right now

without these two sensors working, when above idle there's no way the engine will get the right amount of fuel. if you keep this up, there's a chance you'll run the engine extremely lean and break/melt/damage something important - like a piston.

Id say take it and get it professionally tuned...no point stuffing around if you dont actually know where you need to start.

...well, your listed symptoms sounded like running lean (particularly the run out of fuel when you load up the engine bit)

so... was the ECU previously used on this or similar motor? you have MAP sensor plumbed in?

and is wired up as per a haltech wiring diagram for your ECU?
<http://www.haltech.com.au/downloads.htm>

rich could be a number of things:
fuel pressure too high
warm up enrichment too high or temp sensor not connected
wrong injectors
timing wrong
other sensors (map or TPS) not right
...

...i'd start at basics first - is it hooked up right, are the physical things right, before progressing onto how to drive the haltech with a laptop...
