i was wandering if there is anything i can do to the gearbox so that i dont have to lift the gear stick to get it into reverse or does it just mean a new gearbox???

why would you want to get rid of it?
Its awesome, when i had mine and i took it to get a wheel balance and alignment i had a great time laughing at the guys who couldn't find reverse Smile

take the shifter off, look at the mounting plate and you will notice a raised spot where the reverse position is, just grind or file it off

haha i didn't even know that there was meant to be a lift for reverse...... woulda saved me from a few attempts at hitting 6th gear....... Rolling Eyes

tyhe factory 5 spd ta22's actually have lift written on the gear knob for reverse...

yer i had that problem 4 a while but after awhile of slamin it into reverse it just went striaght in...i must have snaped the thing ur supposed to file off...lol

Majority of them wear off after 30 or so years i think you'll find, all three i've owened didn't need the lift, until i pulled a box out one day and i think i put that collar thing in wrong on re-assembly, after that i needed to lift it lol!
