1jz Cressida auto problems Thu, 06 May 2004 12:40 Go to next message
Okay guys, ive posted about this before but never got a straight answer =\

Ive got a 1jz cressie automatic, self conversion using EVERYTHING from chaser half cut. Auto had problems from day one, never shifted into overdrive until you backed off at around 160km/h. Has shift problems (have to 'ease' it into 2nd and 3rd) Unless you have the MANU button on in which case 1st-2nd is beautifully smooth, but 3rd wont happen until you back off at about 80km/h. Had auto serviced with type 4 and the 'auto specialists' had the car for 3 weeks before coming to the conclusion that the problem is ECU related (Fried?) I also have a Greddy speed cut controller which came with the cut (could this be the same problem as with the V8 soarers with this unit?).
A few weeks back, the timing belt tensioner decided to detach itself which meant i had to remove the rad/trans cooler to access the timing belt, upon replacement i had NFI how much trans fluid i had lost so i added about 1l. Now occasionally if i get up to highway speed, the car will shift into overdrive by itself, all gears will shift at correct spots and i wont need to backoff to get into 2nd/3rd/overdrive. As soon as i stop for a traffic light however, it will go back to shifting like shit again Sad

Sorry for the long post but one more thing. If i nail the throttle in first, manually shift second with the manu button on, about .05sec after the shift, the car will lurch as if it is starving for fuel, and then instantly return to pulling...any ideas on what it could be, ive got a walbro 500hp pump so its not starving there...fuel filter maybe?, its not much but i know its not normal and it could mean that extra bit on the local 1/8th mile Smile

Thanks heaps in advance guys,

Cheers,

Troy

Firstly you check the auto oil level while runing warmed up in N or P

next remove the speed cut see if it shifts correctly or not

if its still not working do the auto trans diagnostics as listed in the TSRM if not available for the front cut use the MA70/JZA80 TSRM it should be a similer process

I have a similar problem with the sort of stalling at the top of 1st gear. I was told I actually hit the rev limited before the auto could change which is understandable with a 4.6:1 diff Smile

I have also seen many 1jz soarers that seem to pop and fart at the top of first gear for a second and then start pulling again. I read that it was a safety mechanism for the auto. I don't know if that is what mine is doing though?

P.S I have EVERYTHING from a jzx90 chaser in my corona Smile Did you swap the dash?

Auto problems with Cressida 1J, and the same problems in a 1UZ Soarer, were both fixed by replacing the internal solenoids. Auto trans places in both cases were unsure as to what was going on, so when all else fails, blame the ECU (not my problem take it away!) Soarer solenoids from another Soarer box, and Cressida solenoids came from the Cressie box which was behind the original 7M.
Just think, why was the car turned into a half cut in Japan? maybe the box was sus, labour to fix in Japan way too much!

Hope this helps, regards Chuck.

the reason they bring half cuts is to bring a full car is a waste of space

have u ever seen importers bring a shitload of rear cuts
except more like mr2 cuts

alot of people have probs with autos when doin transplants

i have done afew 1jzs and no probs what so ever except for abs related probs

its hardly ever the ecu

Yeah but why do the japanese stop driving their cars all of a sudden and turn them into a wrecking yard?
Why would anyone just cut a perfectly good & operating JZX90 Chaser in half? Mechanical repairs are very expensive in Japan so often if they have a weird probably thy will get rid of them.
Off course it is cheaper to just bring in the most valuable part of the car ie the front cut.
While it is more expensive in japan to register an older car the japanese are still driving older cars and these are the same cars as the front cuts we are getting now.

sometimes there is problems with themn
they dont really service their cars there
they just throw em away and buy a new one

just because its a chaser doesnt mean its worth alot in japan

speak to an importer and u wil get the right answer

i know of importers cuttin up perfect series 6 rx7's

like u see a 180 sx here afew yrs ago there wasnt many of them
well in japan theyre like a commodore theyre everywhere

this is the main problem with doin conversions

how do u know what u r gettin is perfect

and how do u know the work done is correct

so many problems are hard to explain on a forum

and there a similar amount hard to solve

do some diagnostics first even see if someone has a diagnostic scanner to plug into it

chase up worskshop manuals and see what they say

the first thing u have to determine is

is it mechanical or electrical problem
in the workshop manual they will tell u how to determine this

OMG...i got so excited when you posted that link, i went straight out and shoved a pair of stainless tweezers into E1 and Tt connectors to act as a patch cable...it looks as though the chaser doesnt have a connector in the Tt hole...its covered in dieelectric grease but im pretty certain theres just plastic mounting lugs inside...so i went to the other diag' connector under the dash, which has all the plugs. Following the TSRM's instructions exactly...it did nothing Sad Is this cars fate destined to never have an auto that works properly? With optimax sitting at $1.14 a litre this morning and me driving car with no overdrive on apprentice wages with a heavy right foot....a manual conversion is looking better by the day sadly.

lookin at the ecu

this is the ecu with 4 plugs
each plug has 4 rows of pins in it

like a jzz30 ecu

well lookin at the ecu
with the clips which hold the plugs in at the top

the pin that is at the top right hand side of the ecu is the tt pin

the bottom right pin should be black with red trace

the plug at the right i think has 29 pins

*brings back from the dead....*

I forgot to get everyone updated on this.

It took me about 10 seconds to fix this problem lol...all i did was, open cressida boot, locate cover over ABS computer, detach plugs from said computer, drive car with a perfectly working auto! Stupid thing was trying to use the wheel sensors todetect speed and therefore change gears, even though they arent hooked up...jeez lol

lets revive this again

thats because they gotta run a big emmisions type test on their cars eveyr 2 years and its almost cheaper to sell and buy a new one, which is why we alwasy get low km cuts, they see at most 2 years of service b4 getting chopped

i had this problem with my auto... changed fluid Very Happy

Check your TPS is working properly and calibrated correctly.

This was the reason my Auto was shifting weirdly when we first got it running - discovered the TPS was rooted. Replaced it with a new one and bingo - perfect shifts

99% of 1js op and fart on gear changes. the ecu retards timing i believe which makes it shift softer making the box last longer and also making shifts more comfortable for the passengers.

this was what i was told by MV prior to having my gearbox rebuilt.

Re: 1jz Cressida auto problems Thu, 25 August 2005 00:40 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hmm maybe it is the TPS, like last night I took a guy for a spin in my car out at Raymond Tce, floored it, it dropped back a gear and pulled reasonably hard, then a few secs later it dropped back another gear and really caned along like it should.
Same thing if I want to do as 0-100 run, sometimes it takes off like a rocket, other times it won't (relatively speaking). Reckon this is TPS? Just seems like the tranny isn't always kicking down, or at least not down as many gears as it should.

Where is a cheap place to source a TPS? I need to get a JZA70 throttle body anyway, as I have the JZX81 one with the traction control butterfly (unwanted air restriction). Would this come with the TPS?

Thanks Smile

do you have a cable operated kick down? (cable run from transmission to throttle body)

tighten that to make it shift hard everytime, all the time

youll save your torque converter (its doing less) but youll wear ya engine mounts down faster (theyre doing more)

Guys guys, i only bought this topic back from the dead to tell you how i solved the problem! (read back a few posts) It was a matter of simply disconnecting the ABS computer....stupid me lol

Shane - The popping and farting you talked about i encounter and understand. The first problem i noted must have been totally different and speed sensor related, as the car actually lost a lot of power and revs and kind of 'bucked' before pulling hard again. The shifting is fine now and that has dissapeared.

Sideshow - I used a jzx-81 cut and utilised EVERYTHING forward of the front seats, i would have gotten you to do it if you werent 600+kms away! The only things that dont work are the power aerial, ABS (as expected), cruise (i dont want the ugly cruise box in there anyway lol) and TRC...I prefer Lack of Traction Control (LTRC).
I dont know about the aerial, i recon ive plugged in a connector wrong somewhere along the line and fried it.

Thanks for all your help guys, i'd be screwed without a lot of you lol.

Cheers,

Troy

Well the O/D light flashes on the dash (common problem with 1JZ conversions), but I think this is unrelated.
First thing to try will be tightening the kickdown cable on the left. The problem is intermittent, seems more common when I am moving at low speed rather than just sitting still, but I haven't tried troubleshooting it to that extent yet (fuel costs too much Wink )

This is my setup:

http://ribfeast.no-ip.com/cressida_throttle_cable.jpg

Wilbo sent me a rubber thing for the accelerator cable to go through, but I will need to fabricate a strong metal bracket for it to go onto, as the cable will not fit in the normal position (it is too long, Cressida throttle cable instead of proper 1JZ/Chaser one)

How much do you want for that TPS/Throttle body combo? $100? I know a bloke in newcastle selling one for similar $, but it that falls through I'll take it off your hands.

I don't have ABS (GLX model) so that isn't a problem.
No idea who did the wiring, Scrote might know as he did the conversion.
