There is $8m in the current budget for a Drag strip.

Bout time I say. However the $8m is on the condition that the car clubs etc find a suitable location...could be tought seeing as the government can't even get a location for a (much needed) road passed, what chance do car clubs have??

Put it next to the Gaol that way the only people effected are from Queenbeyan. No matter where the govt puts something like this they are going to piss someone off, may as well be someone who doesn't vote in your electorate!

ACT GOVERNMENT COMMITS $8 MILLION FOR A NEW DRAGWAY IN CANBERRA

At 3.00 pm on Tuesday May 4th, the Treasurer of the Australian Capital Territory Mr Ted Quinlan, announced an ACT Government funding commitment of $8 million for the construction of an international standard quarter mile drag racing facility in Canberra. The announcement came amid the release of the ACT Government Budget for 2004.

The Government’s commitment follows a period of more than 5 years of extensive lobbying and campaigning following the forced closure of the previous Canberra drag racing facility in December 1998.

This lengthy campaign, spearheaded by Geoff Develin, entailed proceedings in both the Supreme and Federal Courts, the release of more than 30,000 bumper stickers, placement of full page newspaper advertising, a major protest rally and countless meetings with politicians and officials.

Develin expressed sincere appreciation to all the people that contributed to the result. "This campaign has been a very frustrating and demanding ordeal and could not have continued without the support of many people not only in Canberra but from around Australia, including many prominent drag racing identities.”

The funding commitment is based upon submissions for a stand alone quarter mile track, built to the International level of the Australian national Drag Racing Association (ANDRA). The venue will modeled on the world class venues recently constructed in Sydney and Perth.

“The commitment by the ACT Government is another outstanding endorsement for ANDRA Drag Racing.” said ANDRA CEO Tony Thornton. “With Willowbank Raceway (Ipswich, Queensland), Western Sydney International Dragway (Sydney, New South Wales) and the Kwinana Motorplex (Perth, Western Australia) the Canberra venue will be Australia’s fourth drag racing supertrack. Geoff Develin and his team have done an inspiring job over the past 5 years and we have no doubt that drag racing and the Canberra economy will see some very positive results.”

Thornton said quality venues in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth had generated very strong growth for ANDRA Drag Racing, at competition and off-street level in recent years. “The off-street component of ANDRA Drag Racing is very important because it provides safe, organized options for recreation and entertainment among young drivers”.

The new Canberra venue will incorporate all the features necessary for drag racing events at the highest ANDRA Championship levels, with capacity for up to 12,000 spectators.

A parcel of land in the Majma Valley north of Canberra Airport has been identified as the most suitable location for the dragway. The land falls within the airport noise umbrella, making it an ideal location in terms of acoustic and environmental criteria. The ACT Government is the owner of the site, which is currently leased on a short term basis as farming land.

With a construction time of approximately 8 months, it is expected that the new venue will be available for the 2004/2005 season, which opens in late 2004.
