original engines in RA23/8 and TA22 Thu, 13 May 2004 02:03 Go to next message
Hi there everyone!

This may seem a simple question but i have been unable to find an answer on the web or in this forum:
Were any RA23 or RA28 celicas sold in Australia with the 18R-G (145hp) as original equipment? If yes are they so rare that they cost a lot more than other celicas of that age?

Im looking for a car to build as a track car in 'improved' class - so no engine changes. I think an original TA22 with 2T-G would be good (these do exist don't they?!?) but an 18RG RA28 sounds even better.

Thanks heaps to anyone who can help out!
Miguel

all i know is that the 2TG was only in the GT Ta22's and only came out of japan. The only way they got here is if they were personally imported.

The RA28 GT & GTV's had 18R-G's in them but weren't available to the public in Australia, However there may have been a few brought over by toyota for testing purposes, and the odd private import. The local RA28's were blessed with the 18R-C boat anchor.

You may be able to find a GT (GTV) in Australia but yes they tend to be worth alot more that an LT. For example a clean stock LT probably wouldn't fetch too much more than 4-5000 tops, where as there was a standard GTV for sale recently for around the $17,000 mark and I doubt you'd find a rebuildable GT for too much less than 5,000 unless it was just the body. then again I might be wrong but I can't find any...

Correct, we only got the povo-pack RA23/28 LT2000, which came with an 18R-C. Ditto for the TA22, we only got the 2T-powered LT1600. Any GT1600 TA22's or GT2000 RA23/28's (with 2T-G and 18R-G respectively) found in this country got here as personal imports, and they're quite rare.

thanks for the quick response guys!
i guess it looks like ill have to race a modified class celica if i want a competitive car (im a Ford Four Car Club member and most of those guys have modified escorts anyway). the reason i thought there were 2TG TA22s here was that ive seen ads for twincam lt1600s eg this ad from the tradingpost site:

CELICA '74 lt 1600, twin cam, 5spd, 2 pack, good tyres, recent pass pits, 5mths rego, $3,000 ono. PH 0419848067..

i suppose these ones must all be conversions - celicas are often modified as you guys know!

thanks again

Yes, Celicas with twincam conversions are very common, people have been doing it for years!
