How to remove 1 tailshaft while doing 130kph. DAMAGE PICS

Hi all
don't know really what happened. Was late for work and really belting along the M2 accelerating past some cars.
Heard the tailshaft make a wierd shoooosh noise and shudder and vibrate and next second bang. Look in the rear view mirror to see the front half about 2-3 foot in the air heading towards some cars.
I'm thanking my lucky stars that it didn't do damage to anyone else's cars and only put a ding in my exhaust and wrote of the tailshaft. I don't wont to think what could of happened.
and yes I'm putting a loop on the next one

yeah the uni at the diff end is totally distroyed.
The car is 7MGE powered.
The tailshaft was customised and brand new expet for uni's which were reco'd when i got the car on the road 1 and half years ago. Its only been 7M powered 4 weeks or so.
Yeah the 100m or so of single spinners a few weeks ago and the drags and dubbo i think had a an influence on the incident. Considering the diff centre was blown I should of looked at the tailshaft to.
Having seen this happen I beleive i am very very lucky. and agree with the boys that tail shaft loops should be law.
If you don't have one put one on.

it is metal chain, made into a loop obviously for the tailshaft so that, if it snaps it doesnt dig into the ground and flip your car over. it catches the tailshaft and keeps it safe.

holy f**king crap Stitt, your one lucky chappy.
did the car move around at all other than like the vibrations you mentioned?
i agree with the compulsory tailshaft-loop rule/law aswell, those pictures and Stitt's story are evidence enough.
slightly off-topic, i was sitting next you in traffic the other day Stitt at St. Mary's lol, i think you were towing a trailer, i was having a good ol' gander at your car hehe.
later all!!

hmms might sound wierd but look at say a falcon 6 or V8 tailshaft to modify?
thouse have similar if not greater outputs than a 7m power and torque wise so they should be strong enough and easily sourced ?
looks like its had a crack there and just twisted itself like a straw ..
and nods to tailshaft loops ! i still dont know if the GT4 needs one or not - theres all sorts of things keeping the shafts in place under there

Shit man, that's pretty nasty.
In this situation though a tailshaft loop would have done absolutely nada. Tailshaft loops must be mounted no further than 6" behind the front most uni joint, so if your tailshaft decides to snap any further back than the loop you'd better pray you're as lucky as the Stitt here!
Don't get me wrong, I think tailshaft loops are a great idea, but they are only designed to prevent the shaft dropping down if the front uni breaks.
Here's a pic of my tailshaft loop, it's without the gearbox installed but it gives you an idea of what they look like & where it goes in relation to the hole for the shifter.

Your not limited to one loop though Joel. In my case i'll be having one where CAMS/ANDRA speciy and then one further down near the diff.

I was gonna mention that, but I thought it might end up being a bit of an essay.
You'd have to take into consideration the movement of the tailshaft with the diff though (only with live axle of course), where the shaft goes into the box it's not going to be moving around too much, as the gearbox is pretty solidly mounted, but the closer you get to the diff the more up & down travel the shaft will have when it moves with the rear suspension.
So it would need to have a fairly larger diameter than the front one, which might be limited by space in the tunnel, plus 2 loops will make it a bitch to get the tailshaft in & out!
Otherwise I'm sure there'd be plenty of diff shops out there with supra 5 speed yokes to suit readily available big fuck off unis, and diff flanges to take the same unis (for any common upgrade diff, eg. hilux, which chances are you'd need anyway), which would make a really strong custom tailshaft a not too expensive proposition.
That's if you've got the diff though....

Think I might of found out what went wrong.
Pulled out the rest of the rear uni that was still attached to the diff flange. On inspection you can see that the uni has been operating on an odd angle and has been hitting itself every revolution. As a result of this hair line cracks have formed across the top of the uni. One side gave way and the other had 3 or 4 Hair line cracks.
This explains what happened, well atleast what gave way. i cannot explain why the shaft split in half. There is no damage under the car bar an 12' long 1' to nothing deep ding in the exhaust. So i don't know why it split.
I haven't talked to the tailshaft joint. Am going to tommorrow. This is from my own dectuctions.
Solution. Probably going to have to get an ajustable upperlink for the diff and adjust the angle of the gearbox. The diff and the gearbox are on the wrong angles. This is why the uni's where having issues

I think you'll find it is the Falcon one only as they are one piece and alloy. The current Crumpledore ones are all two piece.
A tailshaft loop is a great thing, but it all depends on where it is placed on the body and where the tailshaft lets go.
The idea with the tailshaft loops (as far as I know CAMS is concerned and correct me if I'm wrong) is for when the front uni/yoke lets go, it supports the tailsghaft and prevents it digging into the ground.
That said. You are very lucky as are those behind you. And boy, do you have an ugly mechanic

I know tailshaft loops are normally made out of chain, but does anyone ever make them out of stuff like closed loop climbing tape, or tube tape?

Luke you are pretty lucky.
You can actually see the damage from where the diff/uni have been intermittently hitting the body in one of the photos.
I suspect lowering the car has brought the tailshaft very close to the top of the transmission tunnel at resting height. Potentially with any savage bump (or axle tramp with burnouts) the tailshaft and uni will have hit the body. I had the same problem with the Corona when I lowered it - I drilled a small hole and used a slide hammer with a screw attachment to pull the body away from area of contact.
The other thing I would do is investigate what pinion angle you are running. Ideally for a multilink setup like that in the Crown you should be running no more than 3 degrees. Any more than this and you will have the tailshaft unis running odd angles and have vibrations thru the drivetrain. I suspect with the savage lowering job you did plus the custom gearbox crossmember, you may have really put this out a mile. Get a magnetic roofing protractor (from Bunnings - $20-30), place it on the 7M crank pulley and the diff pinion face and measure the angles from vertical. Subtract diff angle from the crank angle and that's your pinion angle. To get it into range, you could shim the gearbox up or down, or get some adjustable upper control arms for the diff (from Noltec).

GT you are brillant.
Well done on noticing the floor. its far enough away for normal driving just not 4 when there is 7 ppl on board.
You are spot on with the diff angles and gearbox angle, when I saw the diff end that is what i thought instanly. I just didn't no how to measure the angles. Thanks for that.
Catch you around
