Buying an Aw11 Soon!! Tue, 18 May 2004 00:27 Go to next message

Hi folks, I have found my self for sale a lovely
1988 Aw11 Mr2 which I am thinking of buying in the next couple of weeks. It is a targa, rust free and supercharged. I know I should probably head to some other mr2 forums but I regularly read this board and I know that there are a few ppl who have experiences with these cars. And besides its good to get some feedback from fellow aussies. Some questions are..

what sort of reliablility am i looking at with the mk1's provided i service it regularly? I have an ae82 twincam with 220k's on the mileage and its still a beaut to drive..Im hoping this can be the same with the SC motor.
What about availability and costs of parts? I know these are overseas models, and Im hoping that the aus spec models interchange with the SC version. The 4agze is also not an aus spec engine, so would there be a certain mechanic I have to go to for repairs/problems? Also are the parts readily available as well?

Service wise, Since this is an overseas model, Does it have to go to a specialist to get it regularly serviced? ie. sparkplugs, oilfilter/oil, radiator flushes ect. If so where abouts in melb would you suggest i get it serviced?. Or could i just get it done locally like at ultratune or Kmart auto.

performancewise, I heard that the SC 88mr2's came with a 108kw/186nm AFM gze, whilst the ae101's came with a 124kw/206 version. Would the power/torque difference even out if a 175mm pulley was added to give it more boost? or will the map 101 gze will always put more power+torque if both have 175mm nevo's?
Also If I do decide to upgrade to 175mm pulley, must I change the exhaust system and air filter as well? If so what size diameter piping is needed?

Last and final question is what are your opinions on the aw11 after owning him/her for a while? handling/performance ( btw it seems they dont accelrate well after 120kph..is that true?

Thanks for your time in reading this..
I appreciate you input.
hopefully i can get some pics up of mah new Mr Smiley =

Congrats on making the right choice! Very Happy
Reliablilty should be top notch providing the engine is healthy already, and regular services will keep it that way. ive had mine about a year and a half and have had no mechanical problems, it goes and goes-the 4age engines are very reliable and hardy anyway.
in regards to servicing, the engine works just the same as any other 4a, so you wont need to go to a specialty shop, but someone who does more preformance repairs would be better than a kmart i would say.
most parts you would be able to get from jap wreckers or toyota wreckers as they would have other 4age/agze engines. Aparently alot of the parts you can get from the same era corolla, at a much cheaper price cos alot of the part numbers are the same, but im not sure exactly which ones are interchangable (sorry)

I think the 101 engine will always put out that little bit more power, since you have that bit more as a base. if you get the bigger puller you dont NEED to change the exhaust, but it mightbe a good idea, im not exactly sure since im still running the stock pulley. the air filter you can change in an hour or so anyway so you might as well do that.

AW11=awesome fun. handling is great and performance around the streets is awesome also-see the war stories section for some ppl with aw11's kicken arse on a few surprising cars! (the aw11 is a traffic light monster, you can kill almost any car up to about 100!) in regards to higher speeds, it feels fast and you can feel the boost in acceleration but other cars will be faster-the gze is set up for acceleration not top end, at these sorts of speeds is where the other car will fly up super quick from behind and much all over you Sad

get some pics up asap!

thanks for the input..
was also thinkin of a 1995 civic sir..( b16a )
but im stickin to Toyota Smile
I heard that mr2's were also expensive to work on compared to other cars due to the engine being at the rear..is that true?

anyhow how would the 1995 civic sir compare to the mr2 sc with or without pulley in regards to handling and performance?

145hp vs 160 right?

thnx.

not really all that much more, just because its in the back shouldnt mean your mechanic will put on a premium, but it probably will cost more for the better parts you should put in it (better quality oil, plugs, brakes etc)

an aw11sc will pretty much crap all over almost any car, you shouldn't really compare horsepower as the aw11 has a lightweight advantage so it can hold its own against car much more powerful but heavier.

when you compare a civic vs a supercharged rear engine rearwheel drive car.. its like comparing chalk and cheese! its not the peak power that moves a car, its the TORQUE! the 4AGZE has a SHITLOAD more torque than the honda and therefore will absolutely chop it in a straight line Smile

Thanks for your replies!! ok now after I have made sure thatall the suspension/brakes are in good working order, I am thinking of getting the Oversized 175mm pulley. I heard that this causes extra heat due to the SC spinning faster than norm. Would I have to upgrade my standard intercooler? and If I do, where would be a place I can get one In VIC? I dont usually race cars on the road..but there are times when I like to take my friends for a spin and give it the good o'l foot down.

thanx Smiley =

i *think* it should be ok, a couple of guys in the s.a. club have a nevo and i dont think they have any intercooler modifications, although it would be a good idea to relocate it, the easiest and best spot (for the stock cooler) is to lower it right down the bottom of the engine bay near the tranny.

Any ppl running a nevo add anything?

Thanks for your help folks, very much appreciated. Surprised Surprised Surprised unfortunately I wont be able to get any pics of it as my digi cam is broken at the moment. I should be able to borrow a friends one once I am able to take it home. At the moment we are at the final process of purchase which means, providing everything with the bank goes ok, I should have it by the end of next week, roadworthy/registered ect..
Thanks again guys, and if there is any other things i need to know or look for about Aw11's pls post it here.

With the installation regarding the Nevo Pulley did u guys do it your self or had a workshop do it?
and does the temp seem much higher since installing it?

thanks.

due to the placement of the engine in the mr2, the ideal setup is Water to air (WTA) cooler. An item like off the gt4

Re: Buying an Aw11 Soon UPDATE! Mon, 23 August 2004 10:03 Go to previous messageGo to next message
UPDATE!

the blue aw11 mr2 i had a look at then was in poor state, had silicon all over the seals, interor, body was in poor cond, rattles when driving and the acceleration on my blue top 4ag was better. Engine apparently has done 90k's but it looked old and felt old. Yet he wanted $8500 without rego/roadworthy

I managed to hook up with Marc Boomgard, the same person who provided Neil's Aw11 after this. Apparently he had a grey Aw11 on its way here, and after a lengthy wait, and a few emails and 101 questions later, He gave me a call to say that it was here. I finally had a chance to have a look at it today. Im not sure about you guys, but seeing the car for the first time sitting there puts a big ..and i mean a BIG grin to your face. After staring at pics for a while it does make it all seem geeewd to see something you have waited for in person.

The Car itself is in good nick althought there are some really minor things that needed to be done to it. Interior was also in excellent condition. we took it for a drive and the engine and gearbox felt really strong, unlike the other's I have testdriven.

Kudos to Marc Boomgard though, he answered every question I had through out the process, and usually answered my emails within a day. He was also very informative and was honest about everything regarding the car. Id recommend him to anyone who is looking for an Aw11 or any import car for that matter.

2 more weeks till i pick it up due to the compliance process and drive it home though, but I guess Ive waited this long, 2 weeks cant hurt eh?

will keep yas posted.

edit: might also sell my twinky for between $600 - $800 Its white, body has a few rust spots, engine has done 225,000k's stock except for the sports muffler, interior is in really good cond, 1 wiper not working and passenger door key entry doesnt work due to attempted theft. Still revs strong and gets me from work and back with no problems.
