1. these car are not the fastest car
2. part for them is so RARE
3. the cost of the part is #&$*@#&%)(@#&%)

i just really wish ppl who buy the ae86..buy it for a valid point not because someyone told them it a good car..or INITIAL D FEVER...

people don't think about repair prices until they have to deal with it. I think one of the major appeals is the fact that they were one of the later RWD cars made by toyota that wasn't as big as a supra.

I dont see why anybody would want a piece of shit sprinter!! they are completely over-rated.
ugly, handle like shit when stock, underpowered when stock (4ac), rust like buggery and have a shitty image as a lame ass drifting tofu delivery car. Plus any body thats wants to buy one instantly gets labled as a ricer wanting to drift like initial d.. goddam did i mention they are ugly!
i dont know why any body would wanna go through all that shit just to own a crap car only to spend shit loads of money on it to fix all of its problems.
THERE!! I SAID IT!

I hate idiots like that who think a type of car that they own or want is the "ultimate car" I don't mind the AE86 but think the way some people go one about them is pretty stupid don't get me wrong I have thought about buying one but there are some issues why I haven't nothing against the car itself for what they are there a good car they all have there purposes I just hate they way some people go one about Commodores (remember my who likes Commodores thread?). Why Commodores? Some Commodore owners think that "owning" a Commodore means your top fukin shit. well anyone who thinks there top shit because of the car they drive or a car they want will make them top shit needs a reality check can you really afford the car?(be a commodore, sprinter or whatever),will it suit your needs(remember the road rules your not going to be able to drift, speed and do burnouts all the time with out being caught but if you wanted competition on racing tracks etc why not) are parts readily available for it and affordable I personally think you can do better then an AE86 (not to mock it of course) but there not the ultimate car I just wonder if they had a show where it showed an old stocko Corolla in a street race beating every thing would people wanna go out and buy one? the stupidity of some people

Sprinters are heavily over-rated, yes. And yes the aus delivered ones also need a fair bit of work to be anything decent aswell.
And also all these people who want one, but dont understand whats costs are involved in a decent one (especially a "JDM Panda Trueno" etc..) shit me off alot
...but if your being serious, they dont deserve the flame your giving them.

on a more serious note this time, the sprinters do have a bit of a cult following.
The aus delivered ones were very boring. The truenos look sweet but their high price is a bit ridiculous even though they are good performers.

It's just the cost that make me not want to buy one and it would be no use with me having one as well as I don't enter drift comps and so forth

like any car they do require suspension upgrades to drift well
there are a lot of ae86 haters and a lot of inital d fanboys
but in then end owning an ae86 of any kind is heaps of fun
driving upgrading breaking cleaning
like any car though
its horses for courses. so if you dont like them
simply buy a different car
duh...

I love my aus spec sprinter, it rocks.
even virtually stock!
I guess you can't understand till ya own one.
they're so damn fun to drive! but yeah the stock suspension is scary.. but i just absolutely love the sound of my 4ag hittin 7000 rpm slamming into 2nd... it's just, yeah.
such a forgiving, chuckable car. so nice. don't be hating it.. just ignore it if you don't like it.

well theres another thing too you need money for certain setups(something people don't think off when buying a car they think can do "magical" things with) reality check but I'd have a sprinter for drift comps (never street use) if I had a whole heap of money to spend on it and had parts galor for it (which I will never ever have)

Different strokes for different folks I reckon..... Yeah, there's a lot of ppl who dream of being Takumi, and they give the real enthusiasts a bad name. If I'm driving my Sprinter down the road and someone calls me a try hard Takumi, then I reckon they're the cocksmoke, not me, for being a judgemental dick. Personally I didn't buy my Sprinter coz of Initial D, rather due to the amount of fun had in one (stock 4AC but with great suspension) around Wakefield a few years ago.....
It may be an ugly car to some, but to be honest, the old celicas etc really do nothing for me. It's not the looks of the Sprinter that attract me I suppose. As someone said before, you just have to drive one (with some decent suspension) even with the stock engine to realise they are soooo much fun.
Anyway, just don't be judgemental and throw us all in the "try-hard" basket. It sucks that some of us are finishing building our AE86's around the time that Initial D is getting really popular, coz automatically we're bagged as being wanna be's.
That's my rant, in defense of all the REAL AE86 enthusiasts.

Tommo, your description sounds a bit like stock ta22's, slow, rust like crazy, dont handle great but looks, obviously thats opinion. i love the look of celicas but i like sprinters too. im just assuming thats what you have by your av.
ae864eva, why do YOU have a sprinter? chances are you didnt want one dues to their great records at bathurst or in local rallies, you too probably got one just off the word of others saying how good they were.
fact is, they have an image, young ppl will want one for that reason, thats the way it is just deal with it. if i had have known the culture that goes along with sprinters these days i never would have got one. having said that i love my car and will just pretend im living in the early 90's when they were cheap and easy to get and the only ppl who have heard of them are race/rally fans.

I didn't start this thread to flame ppl. What i really wanted is ppl who thinking of getting AE86 really know what they in for. When i brought the AE86 it was for a project car....why did i pick the ae86?..some of you may ask
i wanted a RWD car..yes there other car why the ae86....i had the following car listed as possible candiate
nissan silvia
celica
skyline
supra
after reading on the NET i realize toyota also make a corolla in RWD. Not knowing anything i read more into the little car.....and came my luck down the street where i live there was sprinter just parking there for years...and i mean years..the car just sit there..i decide to ask the owner if he willing to sell it.
I pick up the aus spec sprinter for $300 actually still in good nick, a little bit of rust.....but hey $300
then my project begin...thousand of dollar pour into the car..also thousand of hours and phone call looking for part. It all worth it for me as i have learned alot from the project...Basically just be aware of what you getting yourself in to when you buy a ae86...It not a car it a hobby and don't expect it to be easy and cheap..because it AIN'T

Well, I've just bought an Aus Spec Sprinter on top of the TA22 I'm currently rebuilding. So I guess you could say I'm twice as mad. I didn't buy the Sprinter to drift, however, as I'm still struggling to come to grips with a motor sport that involves finding the slowest way around a circuit The AE86 might see track work, but not until I've completely sorted the TA22 out.
The Sprinter has to become my daily driver as I have to sell my bike to pay for it. Frankly, if all I wanted was to go fast then I'd keep the bike. I mean, with a machine that can do ~280kmh and does sub 11sec quarters (bog stock) as well as being able to go round corners very quickly, what more could you possibly want...
...and the answer is to be WARM! Damn its cold at this time of year and I've now lost that youthful naievity that blinkers you against the bleedingly obvious. A bike is a great thing, I love 'em and always will, but a nicely sorted car works better for getting the kids around as well as staying dry and warm. The Sprinter will never, ever be as quick as the bike (for the same money), then again not many cars can claim to be. It is however,
1) A Toyota
2) Rear-Wheel drive
3) Light and nimble
4) WARM and dry
5) Hopefully reliable.
6) and it was also (relatively) cheap. I mean, I'd love a JZA80 Supra too, but I'm not that well off. Having said that, I'm sure I paid too much money for it....
Just my take on things
Cheers,
Dan

what's wrong with owning an ae86? i get my ae86 cause i couldnt afford a s13 or 180sx...ppl say stock ae86 is good fun..to me I HATE STOCK SPRINTERS...
yes they are ugly, slow, shitty when its stock..doesnt all the cheap stock cars shitty as well?
well..for those u say why stock sprinters with 4ac sells for 3k-4k...if u buy your sprinter for a great deal..say $500..will u sell it at $500 or less in the near future?? no u wont...u will sell it as high as u can get rite?
i just find it plain stupid that ppl is flaming on ae86 cars...if the owners not happy with owning an ae86..just sell it then..too easy!
btw..can u tell me which car will appreciate in prices?? i think ae86 does..

did any of you genuine aye eee atey six fans consider the possibility that ae864eva is posting a thread like this to gain status in the die hard aye eee atey six community?
it is quite possible that he has seen the flamings that the n00bz bring upon themselves when the come on the forums wanting to buy a tofu panda trueno and thought to himself "how can i penetrate the delicate hymen of the tight knit aye eee atey six crew and enter looking like a die harder aye eee atey six fan. Thus gaining acceptance without having to put in the hard yards on the forums flaming n00bz and drifting when your cruzin.
the psychology of this is quite devious and the only way someone can be exposed is if u challenge them to a.......

ROB how could you???...you have expose my devious plan
On a serious note....iam a true sprinter fan
with the money/time i spent on the sprinter, friend and family think im NUT case and can't comprehend the trouble i go through
they goes why i don't i just go out and buy a skyline GTR simple done..finish
the thing i have done for the car is so funny...i would have to drive all the way to CARDIFF (next to newscastle) took me 2.5 hrs to buy a small part which cost $400 which is more than my car.
Through out the whole project the cheapest part was the CAR itself...$300
so not sure if im crazy/fanatic/psychopath about the AE86

Well this thread is abit pointless. So Ill add my poinless story =p
the reasoning behind me buying my sprinter.
If i had $100,000 i would buy a gtr, simply because they are my fav car and have been since i was like 8years old and I saw them at bathrust in 91 (hence my name) beating down v8's.. (since i was surrounded by bogans growing up I was lead to believe that a v8 commo was the best car on the planet =p) to me there is something about smaller capacity cars beating down what is regarded by the ignorant majority as king and ive grown up on that principal. I also loved the rariety of skylines.. say back in 1995/96. I remember seeking 1or2 a fortnight and drooling.
fast forward to a year and a half ago. looking for my first car, small budget.. wanting a daily driver but also a project car to slowly build up. basically what cars are there out there fitting this description... seriously. you could possibly go a twinky ae82 which i was considering but i really dont like the fwd platform + a car needs potential... lol. Im really not into ur gemi's and so forth (anything pre mid 80's aint my taste). A car I saw with potential was the nx-r.. sr20 for $7k (but evan that was out of my initial purchase budget) Also I was thinking a 206 but meh.
to cut a long story short, downloading a gtr circuit video one day i stumble across a file called 2x ae86 vs r34gtr circuit.. Yeh the r34 driver was dodge but I was more concentrating on how the hachi's moved. Reminded me of oversized gokarts =p So I thought I'd look into them.
So after a fair bit of research (hey i was originially a nissan boy, forgive us for not know they existed. heh) I pretty much found my platform. A 900kg car with 50/50 weight distrib, rwd. Perfect. The car has great potential (i mean cmon its been used in rally and circuit work with pretty cool results for awhile) and also I see it as a plus that they are rare in Australia.
Rust? schmust... if your willing to put time and money into a car (any car) you can make it great. slowly but surely.....
rant over.
I do agree however that $3-4k for a stock 4ac is crazy. But then again I didnt pay that =p
And my word on 'Initial d'. Its a cartoon for christs sake, A good one, I enjoy it. It has a cool story and is well played out. Those that want to pigeon whole anyone with a sprinter as a takumi can get stuffed. And those that want to be takumi's thats cool with me, do what you want.

ae86 may not have the greastest suspension but compared to the cars ive been drving lately since it has been off the road - auto sigma, ke30, 1200 with coilovers, camry wagon, only - i prefer my ae86's handliong to all these, the 1200 handled better ( duh of course ) except the steering rack was fucked and it was toeing out bad, so it was a dodgy drive! but yeh stock handling aint BAD for the street, track it is crap....never mind, have u seen dealer prices for ae82's 4ac - 2999 - 2499 - 3499, 3999, 1999, 1990 - this was just on one road of cars and only the 4k one was a seca!

Bah, what you should all do is buy cressidas, then you will never be followed around by cults or stereotypes (ok except maybe for playing lawn bowls)! (hell most ppl won't even know what your driving )
Another good thing is the cops won't even look twice at your ride
Actually on second thought, lets leave cressidas hidden

there are more "i need to prove myself as a *REAL* ae86 enthusiast and not be classed a wannabe" threads than any other make model. due to the constant shit fight like this thread.
ae86 owners constantly cop shit for being "dorifto wannabes" or "takumi" and constantly need to prove themselves otherwise.
no one else be-littles anyone elses choice of car on toymods so why the ae86?
they are all toyotas in the end and if you can see past the current popularity of the ae86, due to inital-d, you would see its one of toyota's most popular cult cars! japan and the world over! and was so way before 1995 and inital d came along.
it all comes down to a pretty piss-poor, elitist attitude of *some* of the other toyota owners on here i rekon...

Seriously, someone who posts things such as the above:
"Oh man i was pulling this sik drift and hit the kerb then a pole, my baby is destroyed, and the cuntz cops said it was my fault"
They deserve to not only cop flak, but executed for the benefit of the rest of the world.
Problem is, this guy is a cock and demonstrates the fact quite well, but he is (unfortunately) an AE86 driver, and therefore we get bundled in with him.
In my experience, every person I have seen driving an AE82 twinky has been a backwards-hat-yellow fubu tracksuit-wearing, wanker and I would see them and point and laugh in their face. Since using these forums, I have not branded every AE82 fan/driver as the above, rather realised that they are NOT all the same and just have different taste in cars to me, which I do not understand, but that's not the point.
Saying all AE86 drivers/fans are wannabe's is just like me saying all AE82 drivers/fans are from Bankstown and are sponsored by Adidas..... It's just wrong. You can't judge people like that.

Each to there own when it comes to sprinters. As it would to other cars aswell.
I bought my sprinter before i watched any initial D episodes. Wanted a sprinter a few years back but could never find a decent one. So bought other cars. Much newer and ALOT faster. But now, own a sprinter as i found one which was in good condition. Had the goods and price was ok to.
In the end. For a car.. You pay for what you get. You want to pay peanuts. Don't expect much of a car. But if you pay the extra money, The car will be right, and treat you well.

Another good thing is the cops won't even look twice at your ride
Actually on second thought, lets leave cressidas hidden

I have just bought a Sprinter so thought i'd give my situation,
My brother originally got me hooked on these beauties 7 years ago when he saw one on the side of the road, with good suspension & simmons B46's, he brought it home & i fell in love, he got a company car, i got my P's so he let me drive it till i could get my own car, admittedly it was a 4-AC but i have never had more fun in any other car!
I bought an AE92 & have regreted that ever since, i just don't feel as comfortable behind the wheel of it for some reason,
Basicly i have liked them for a long time now long before initial D was around & personally i hate that FU(KING cartoon,
Thanks,
Michael

about those vans drifting.... my mates dad has a Ford Transit SPRINTER which is a 2.4L turbo or something with a stock LSD and hes done some beautiful slides in it. so much torque and such a light back end... and the good thing is... police would never pick it up because its a van. Pretty cool...i think i wanna buy one.
but the main attraction to sprinters is the stigma that surrounds them... drifting, autocross, rally, circuit and so forth.. they are short wheel base RWD with the ability for modification beyond recognition. They are a sort of newer classic recognised by their potential to perform. Theres nothing like them made by toyota to date. thats why they're popular. the last, lightweight, RWD, 4 cylinder hatch from toyota.

what you said about the wannabe's is true, but then why does every bastard give proper ae86 enthusiasts shit, if all you other Toyota owners know that its just sik-cunt Takumi wannabe's and fucktards that keep sprouting and asking bout Sprinters and Trueno's and shit, why dont you give those guys shit, and leave the real ae86 owners and their cars and choice of Sprinter as a car alone. i can name 10 Sprinter owners right now without even thinking that are serious ae86 enthusiasts, and ohh yeh as your mothers always said, if you dont have anything good to say about Sprinters, then dont say anything at all!!
and also the sik-cunt AE82 Twinky driver VS the sik-cunt AE86 Sprinter ratio would be around 100/1, in that order. out of all the Sprinters ive seen, 2 drivers have been wankers, yet everytime i see an AE82 Twinky, its some hectic cunt with the doof-doof blaring, its either red or white in colour, with a hectic cannon. fucking FWD fags!! j/k. lol.

I personally think it has something to do with the level of over-exposure the sprinter gets on the board. In past weeks there have been as many posts related to the sprinter as there have been to almost all the other cars combined. When you combine this with the inane ever-repeated questions aimed at "low cost" drifting it fair raises the hackles of those reading the posts and I can quite understand and agree with the sentiment.
There is also a trend on the board for rarity-factor being cool. As soon as something becomes popular, then it's not cool anymore. Sadly, the Sprinter seems to be the car in the spotlight at the moment (for better or worse) and so to the board incumbents in general, it is most definately, not cool. Perhaps if ppl were doing things like a 2ZZ-GTE conversion into them then there might be some genuine interest and some very good techincal discussion going on. Until then I have to sit here with my newbie bullshit filter on cringing everytime someone posts about how cool they'll be drifting in a Aus-Spec AE86...
just my 1.07 after-tax cents...
Cheers,
Dan

thats why I'm getting annoyed with lately. you do get sick of hearing the same old things over again and to cop crittism from one AE86 driver about the choise of car i drive is also pathetic. you start to wonder why people hate them. i like the car, it's some of the drivers and there attitudes that pisses me off and I am starting to get put off by them (same as why I hate Commodores (not all sprinter drivers are wankers) but it seems to be on the rise about sprinters I always used to think before I joind this forum for some reason Supra's would be getting the biggest wrap but apparently not. although the anyone welcome but AE86's cruise thread was a bit harsh but to the sprinter owners I thought... maybe will hear stories soon about sprinters being nicely restored to mint conditon and a reco 4A-GE with a bit of an exhaust and a nice set of mags and being looked after instead of the usally I wanna know a cheap drift set up and I smashed my sprinter into a pole whiile drifting stories i think a lot of people are sick of hearing

Thats what my car used to be, exactly that, looked after and mint cond. It gets boring quick when you have a car that loves to be driven.
I can see how all these repetitive and newbie filled posts can piss you all off. They sure piss me off, and give the sprinter owners who arnt tightarsed takumi wannabes a bad rap.
