Hilux diff ratios Tue, 15 June 2004 07:43 Go to next message
Well here I'm here again, needing knowledge I am having problems getting a suitable ratio diff for a 2WD hilux. I have converted it from auto to manual but the ratio is far too low and the speedo is out by about 10kph ie; at 80kph the speedo is reading 90kph and the engine revs reflect this as the poor girl is revving its heart out. It had a 3.5 to 1 g series diff so it was suggested to go to 4.9 but that has only made it worse as I can wind the speedo off the dial at around 100kph real road speed.
so therefor I must need something around 3.1 , does this sound right or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Whoever suggested you go to a 4.9:1 ratio needs their head read; that's ridiculously low! 3.5:1 sounds about right, just put that back in. I have 3.5 gears in my Supra and I find it works quite well. 3.1 is extremely tall and is not recommended unless you have a big V8 or something!

That is me who needs the head reading.
Based on every single 2WD G series Hilux diff I have seen in wreckers here in WA, I have only seen crown / pinion combinations of 39 / 8 = 4.875 and 41 / 9 = 4.555. These have been on LN and RN 30's and 40's.
I got it backwards when Dave described the problem to me.
Sorry.
Dave,if you had a "3.5 to 1" originally it sounds like it was a 41 / 12 = 3.417 from a 94-97 LN86. To my knowledge Toyota did not make a taller ratio that this in a G series diff.
The next closest is a 41 / 11 = 3.727 in a 88-97 LN85 or a 39 / 10 = 3.9 in a 94-97 YN86 Grinner.
Read us the build plate on the firewall. I can work out exactly
what diff ratio you had originally.
If the gods are smiling maybe you had a 3.7 diff originally and we can source a 3.4 instead.
Again, my apologies Dave.
Mitch.
