Just some questions Sat, 03 July 2004 14:12 Go to next message
Hi,
This is probably a bit silly, but i have a 1979 Toyota Dyna with a 5R motor. (2litre Carby)

I just resprayed it, and the engine is losing heaps of oil and is probably due for another engine (we have replaced the engine once so far already..but the donor is a bit long in the tooth as well)

anyhow, i want to take out this motor in the next 12 months or so and want to rebuild it and get it all A1.
I was considering some better performance for the motor as it is a bit slow pulling a load...but it keeps going ..great truck.

So i was thinking maybe a Turbo for the 5R or even one of the Toyota blowers. (i think blower is better for low down torque)
The problem is i dont have much info on the 5R engine?
Ive googled and little comes up.

anyone who has any links on anyone doing anything with the 5R ould be a nice help.

Also i am after the Superchargers crankshaft pully diameter from the 1ggze blower?

that is the 2litre in-line six with the blower i think?
Or where those blower only used on the early MR-2s?

I have one of the blower and i need it to work out the pully ratios ruoughly for a diffrent engine...to know how mch harder i have to push the blower. (this isnt for the Dyna.)

Cheers.

That model 5R will only have a 3 mains crank. Don't get too excited trying to extract power from these old things.

I have some manuals on rebuilding the old 3Rs and 5Rs.

There was never anything exciting for these motors out there.

How about a later R motor, such as 10R or 18R-G?

There were two blowers in that series you mentioned. the SC12 and the SC14.
The SC12 was on the MK1 MR2 and the GTZ AE92 and AE101s. The SC 14 was on the 1G-GZE.

I htink there is also an SC20

Thanks guys,

Takai:

Will the blower say S-14 on it, how do i identify it?

Also the 1GGZE is that a 2litre straight 6?? (im not 100% sure??)

I might have to look in to those other engines you mentioned
10-R and 18R-G

I was considering a Holden 186 ...it is a common mod....have to look in to it a bit more.

Thanks Again.

The 18R-G is a high-revving twincam engine, which is great in a Celica but isn't going to work well in a truck. I'd recommend a 22R-E, which is the largest of the R series engines (2.4L) and is tuned for lots of bottom-end torque. The fuel injection is a bonus too.
