Anyone know what would be involved in replacing a 4E-FE with a 5E-FE in a 97 Starlet. If the motors are similar would the 4E-FE computer be able to run it OK. I assume I could use the same g/box.

Any info would help.

What is the 5E-FE out of??? You could always go for a 4E-FTE and i think that u would need the new computer but the gearbox should fit fine...

I dont think you have a chance using the standard 4E computer on the 5E! Not without getting it remapped, Which i think would cost more than a cheap aftermarket item!

Why would you want to put the 5E-FE in, when all the people with the 5E-FE want to swap it for the 4E-FTE.
The 5E-FE isn't a strong motor.
Maybe even just put a turbo on your 4E-FE.
A 4E-FTE engine is only $1295 with wiring loom and computer. Then all you need is for someone to put the wiring in for you.

I agree with the above, don't use the 4E ECU on the 5E. Even if the pin outs are a direct plug in, in any condition when the 5E wants max fuel and the amount the 4E ECU delivers is less than this, you will run lean and do $$$ of damage.
And yes, the 5E should be a direct bolt in, but if I was you I would look at a 4E-FTE half-cut and bolt that in instead.
I think with a 97 you have an EP90 Starlet, look for a turbo EP90 half-cut.
Mitch.

just stick a turbo on the stock motor,

i have done this to my girlfriends motor, makes 139hp at the wheels on 12psi boost, only mods are a water to air intercooler, 7mge injectors, microtech LT8, stock fuel pump, stock regulator, heavy duty clutch, 2.5" exhaust,

we fitted our TD04L kit to the car, bolts on with the stock radiator, air con etc all still in place, the microtech controls the idle motor for perfect cold starts and air con idle up etc,

it gets 430km to 30L petrol which is slightly more than it got when it was stock,

the 5e are a shit motor unless you spend big $$$ on them,
our TD04L kits have proven them selves with 195hp at the wheels and 12.9@112mph at eastern creek

here are the pics of my girlfriends starlet,
