Talk to 'deesonet', I believe he has done this conversion and I think he had to modify the sump.

why would you want to? its so much cheaper and easier to do an RB25 conversion. or an RB30 with RB25 head. the money you save you can put towards exhaust, FMIC, turbo upgrade etc...

just turbo the rb30...if you can manage to put on an rb20 head and you can expect to see quite considerable numbers...seriously

I have written a complete article on the conversion.

PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy.

Sent a copy to Toymods but Nark has been a bit slow posting it onto his new site! One day it will be listed for all to see.

Rolling Eyes

I'm going to be a bit defeatis here, but I'd suggest you're best selling up and getting a VL Turbo. You get a better diff (sometimes even with LSD), rear discs, bigger front brakes, marginally better suspension, and 15" wheels from the factory... it also happens to come with a turbocharger, larger injectors and a better factory power output.

As much as it's nice to be a bit different, engine conversions aren't the easiest thing in the world even for a technically minded person.

It will probably only be a few grand changeover - you might even find one for around the $10k mark that someone has spent heaps of money on.

NB: Don't bother with twin cam head swaps on the RB's unless you're chasing 8 second passes or sustained big revs (eg. circuit racing)... and even then I wouldn't use any but the RB26 head.... hydraulic lifters are poo Confused

Twincam is just one of those things people automatically assume you need to make power. Yes it's ideal but for the money and effort you can normally get better gains elsewhere.

first of all why a vl there like assholes, everybody has one. its bs about the single cam head, most people use the rb25de head without vct, mine has been modified with bigger valves cam ect and has cost $2700 complete. (all good bits used) but u can use the standard rb25de head, all other twin cams are difficult to addapt because of differnt water jackets. 1jz conversion is good but for the money u save on doing the rb25det u can buy yourself a decent car thats not a taxi Laughing

I can't help you with your question, but if you are looking to save some dollars and you buy just a 1ZJ-GTE engine, and not in a half-cut, I have a 1JZ-GTE entire engine loom, ECU ('1JZ GT M/T) and igniter for sale.
PM me if you are interested.
Thanks,
Mitch.

Re: 1JZ into VL Commodore Conversion Tue, 03 August 2004 09:03 Go to previous messageGo to next message
There are few reasons I want to do this conversion.
I already own the VL have had it for 6 years
It already has 28 spline axles, 4 pinion LSD diff
VT twin piston front calipers & 330m disc and rear discs.
All of the suspension have been upgraded.
All It need is a little more poke.
RB25DET manual front cut is $5500.
can you see why now?

RB30T are also very powerful upon giving them some boost Rolling Eyes

one of norbies mates has a vl running a t03, yes a t03 and that pulls low 13s in factory trim!

If you want something different and do the spanner work yourself you can changeover to the 1JZ for about $5000.

The VL is still very popular in Qld so is probably the same your way as well. Why not do it??

5500 for a rb25det is murder down here in sydney u can get one for 3300. its a simple swap into a vl. toranas are Evil or Very Mad and were driven by the legend peter brock. if u take a look at the fastest cars in australia not rotary powered the top 3 are toranas the fastest production car in aus is also a torana. so anybody who recons they are a shit car dont knnow much about motorsport or are ignorant rice boys who think v8s are dinosaurs.

I'd suggest you are the ignorant one if you think Toranas are a good car just because the fastest drag cars in the country are loosely based on a Torana shell. The cars could just as easily be based on a Commodore shell, or a Falcon, or a Skoda for all the difference it makes; hardly anything from the original car is left once they've finished building those monsters.

LMAO Nice call on the Skoda Very Happy

I think a VL is a good base for one reason. I am biased because I am a fan of nicely done ones, but the reason I think they're a good base is that there are a myriad of aftermarket bits. Anyone here who has tried to modify a Toyota will agree that parts, infor & willing helpers are hard to come by. You also have to be a trendsetter or else hope that the information you find about other people's projects is vaguely accurate.

You can buy any one of about 15 brake upgrades, you can get off-the-shelf parts from any diff shop (you can get an off-the-shelf diff conversion!), any shop will have suspension experience, seats can be upgraded from other models, general parts are dirt cheap because there are heaps of them, and the car also won't attract attention if you don't want it to.

Anyone who bags them just because they are a Commodore would be somewhat ignorant... and in fact deserve to own the poor-handling underpowered open-wheeler'd carby'd atmo Sprinter they probably aspire to have.

Just as V8 bogans are closed minded, anyone into "jap" stuff is closed minded against Commodores.

Oh, and bogan V8s at that Evil or Very Mad But hey, why the hell can't car people just learn to get along, hmmm? I do my best to appreciate both sides of 'the argument' - nothing beats 'jap cars' for go potential for size, or being fun to play with, but then nothing can quite touch a 'dinosaur' for sheer brute force appeal - it can grow on you! Besides, pretty much ALL the cars/engines we all play with here are outdated - 4AGs etc. didn't come down in the last shower either!

Oh yeah, all internal combustion engines are filty, enormously inefficient, noisy things - no matter how many camshafts they've got Razz

Stick to the 1jz. Having owned an RB25 180 for a year I can atest the RB25 is at best an average engine in std trim. Even if you raise boost beyond 10psi the ecu pulls timing, and they seem under-torqued for a turbo 2.5. On std boost, annoying two stage power delivery can see you get hosed if your out of gear. And then you have high compression with pistons that are renowned to blow rings at 200rkwk+. Add to that the cost (insult to injury).

1jz, just as strong as a rb26 but for qtr the price. 300rkwk bottom end, just nesecitates big enough compressor/s. highly underrated nuff said.
