5M-E stalling Wed, 04 August 2004 09:50 Go to next message
Starts fine, misfires a bit, surges to 1500 or so then drops off and stalls, if I hold it up and give it more throttle it goes up to 1500 or so again and drops of on the way to a stall.
What is a likely problem, all my hoses are in order, could it be fuel pressure regulator?

it could be the fuel pump. i know someone with simmilar symptomes, it could start and idle, but could not go much higher in revs, and no load, otherwise it would just stall.
but could be a few things.

Yeah that's what I thought initially, but I can hold it at 1200 or so, but after I take my foot off it just dies, or I'll catch it just before it stalls, take it up to 1700 where it will stay and then eventually stall again.
I'll try some stuff, just thought someone might have had a similar problem.

Does it do it hot? cold?
Is it drivable?

Any leaks in intake tubing?
AFM plugged in?
Idle screw needs adjusting?

Run it for a bit, and let it stall, then pull the plugs out.
Are they covered in fuel? or dry?

My 6M-GE did exactly the same thing when there was a leak in the inlet piping between the AFM and throttle body. Turns out I'd melted a big hole in that plastic air resonator thing when the exhaust got really hot. Check for leaks!

I replaced the elbow above the resonator with some spiral-wired pipe, since the original pipe was cracked something shocking... thing is that may have made it worse, considering I can't get a proper seal with that spiral stuff.
I'll try to limp 15 minutes to Toyota and hopefully they'll have the proper hose... not even hose specialists have it, so I had to settle for this spiral stuff.
Weird thing is I made it up from the Gold Coast, took it for a spirited (Very Happy) drive while I was up here and it's fine... so I replace all the sticky-taped stuff for it to pass road worthy and yes this was an item... gotta be it.
It seems like a likely explanation, thanks guys.
