In regards to Portishead, the 1994 'Dummy' albumn which the song 'glory box' is off is a fantastic albumn and probably worth getting your hands on. I believe that it was albumn of the year or best seller or something similar in 94 when it was released.
'Ain't no sunshine' was originally written by Bill Withers from memory and has got to be one of the most highly covered and rerecorded songs ever! hehe
Its kind of hard to give you ideas on this music 'category' cos its a pretty broad area.
Some of the talented female artists i have amongst my collection that you may want to have a go at are-- Beth Orton, Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Tori Amos, Morcheeba etc.
I could go on for ages but thats a few crew with really amazing songwriting skills and powerful voices. You may have to look a bit harder to find much Cat Power stuff but in my opinion it would be worth it- particularly the 'you are free' albumn. It could be an aquired taste though?

Go and buy Portishead 'Dummy' and self titled albums. You'll love every minute of each one.
