major oil leaks

well i notice major oil drops when i drive off from where i park.. looked under the bonnet and there seems to be oil residue down the top cover of my engine.. like where the top half would join the bottom half (sorry for the technical terms there) i have no idea where this oil is leaking from what are the main areas to look for and if theyre coming from there wats the fix
You need to be more specific about where the oil is coming from. If it's leaving a pool behind wherever you park, then I'd say it sounds a little nasty.
However, it could be coming from a loose (or leaky gasket) on the rocker cover and this isn't a major issue.
What type of engine is it? Is there oil swimming around where the sparkplugs are? Try wimping away the oil and then start the motor and have a good look to see where it's coming from and how much is coming out.
