early version of the SX came in an AE82 or AE86 i believe, the 4age made 88kw while the 89-91 Corolla SX came in a Seca & Hatch which made 100kw. 91-93 they made the GTI which was a rebadged SX with stock wheels and a slightly different front bar(very minor difference is in the length) and color coded the rear wing.

If you can get the 89 SX for about $3,500 that is really cheap.
At the moment i believe the cost is between 5,000 to 7,000 depending on the condition.

i thought ae92 'SX' came out in august of 1991?..but for that price man i think it is worth it Smile depending on KM's on clock and condition..for that price u would expect it to be pretty dodgy..so if it isnrt then u got ur self a good deal make sure u get a machanic to check it over first tho

yes , 100kw sounds great for a 1.6l engine i know, and it is, but there is a real lack of torque down low. when takeing passengers u really notice the difference, but when ur driving by urself, or only l one small passenger, its HEAPS of fun!

these engines really dont have much go down low, but once u get over 4k rpm, it becomes a MONSTER!!!

lol, not really. but the engines really do turn on after 4k rpm and go hard up tp 7k rpm.

SX came out in the ae92s.
The ae82s with the 4AGEs were badged as twincam 16 or something similar.

mid 1980's to 1988 = Twin Cam Corolla (86kw 4AGE) seca + flatback hatch
1989 to 1990 SX rolla series 1 (might be til 1991 not sure) 100kw
1991 to 1992 series 2 sx rolla 100kw more power options with this one.

geez for a toyota forum theres alot of wrong information going up here i thought ppl would know a little better.

in answer to your question ive seen them go on the trading post for 4k for a stock one with around 180000kms but the secas r cheaper than the hatches from what ive seen in the non modifed examples off people who have no real idea about cars.

very lucky man!
I saw a AE92 SX for $5k. However it had 260,000kms and the exhaust was hardly recognisable (corrosion)...

Seems a bit cheap, so make sure whatever you do, check it out completely...

still seems a bit cheap tho

I bought my 1990 corolla seca sx for $3650 about a month ago.
car has 216k on it but the engine only has around 120k according to mechanic.

Mine was pretty cheap and needs some cleaning up, however mechanically it needed a little bit of work up front (timing belt, tune, oil leak fixed) and it only came with a couple of months rego.
