100Kw Bottom end + 88Kw Head?
|

Hi All.....
Just wondering if anybody or if it can be done to install an
88Kw head (IE: AW11 4age) onto a 100Kw bottom end, without any
other changes required (IE: Injectors, ECU, etc.)
Has anybody attempted this? If so, what were the results?
Thanks
MIKE.

mike,
it's a really worthwhile conversion - i wonder why toyota did not do it. you need to fill in the oil return drain in the block, all bolts together (we did it years ago with an mr2 - fitted c60 at the same time - car was a ball to drive!!)

it would be like putting higher comp pistons in the 88kw..and the added bonus of bigger/stronger crank rods and pistons, you would have really felt the t-vis kick in with that wouldn't you? i drove a stock 100kw rolla, and it felt less torquy, and the 88 less top end..so you would have the best of both worlds!

I recently sold a 100kw engine to a guy who did this to his AE82 Corolla. The hybrid engine apparently had a load more torque through the rev range, but lost a cylinder quickly. I compression tested the sick motor and it still had compression in all four pots, but number one was down. I've since been told the head he put on there had been cooked a few times, prior to installation on the 100kw bottom end and still have not been told why the cylinder dropped out.

Hi All.....
Cool.... Would you also need to change the injectors or would
you simply keep the current 88Kw injectors? Correct me if I'm
wrong, but the 88Kw injectors are 269cc and the 100Kw injectors
are 296cc? or are they the same.
Any other tuning on ECU side required?
Flogbag.... I'm looking in the vincinity of about 90-100Kw....
Thanks
MIKE.

keep stock 86kw efi. only changing bottom end - nothing else.
bigger cams would be good too.

I thought AW11 4a's (well 88-89 model) actually had this setup already, because isn't the 7 rib block the 100kw bottom while the 3 rib block the 86kw bottom. and those late AW11's have the 7 rib block with the bigport head, I thought thats what made them 88kw.
I am probably completely wrong in this if some one can give me direction, there is just to many varients of the 4a
or are the internals in the 100kw block different to that of the later AW11?

aw11 has a 7 rib block, but 8.9:1 c/r pistons. otherwise the block/ crank/flywheel etc is basically the same as 100kw bar:
no oil squirters
no external drain to sump

Hi All....
Actually, there are about 4 different major variants of the 16v
4ag engine.....
4age 88Kw, has 9.4:1 comp ratio, with 3 and 7 Rib blocks, big
port head. Found in early MR2, and Corolla.
4age 100Kw, has 10.4:1 comp ratio, with only 7 Rib blocks, small
port head. Found only in the Corolla FWD.
4agze 140Hp, has 8.0:1 comp ratio, with 7 rib blocks, SC, big
port, no oil squirts (Some do, some don't), found in AW11, &
Corolla.
4agze 160Hp, has 8.9:1 comp ratio, with 7 rib blocks, SC Smaller
pulley SC pulley, small port, oil squirts. Found only in Rolla.
Good jump for SC guys is to simply swap the old 4AGZE for new
4AGZE, and that alone will give a considerable jump in power.
The setup, I'm contemplating doing is Small port 100Kw 4age
bottom end with a Big port 4age 88Kw. That way you get the
benefits of good torque bottom end, and good reveability at top
end, with a little bit more power!!!!
Anyway.... got good experience with force induction, but not
that knowledgeable with NA engines, and hence, the questions.
Thanks
MIKE.

also for reference..the small port engine (100kw) has bigger internals, ie 20mm gudgion pins, and 42mm crank, and lack of 'tvis', only the big ports (88kw) have tvis, from experience the 88kw are a bit more bottom end happy and free rev (clutch in or in neutral) a bit easier than the 100kw, prolly due to the increased material in the 100kw motors make them a bit heavier..but inherently weaker..

you can get close to teh same affect by simply fitting a set of 88kw cam gears to a 100kw and advancing the timing, this gives you more pickup and power on earlier in the rev range.

but the bigport head has more potential on bigger cams.

86 & 100kw cam gears have the same timing.
