Intercooler piping advice ( front mount ) Sun, 22 August 2004 04:25 Go to next message
Needing some tech help with a question i have re intercoler piping

Im going a frontmount now on my Gt4 - Core is a 600 X 300 X 75 bar and plate unit with GTR style end tanks ( three inch outlets )..

My problem is i have a 2.25 inch outlet on the turbo - and 2.5 inch inlet on the intake manifold

Now - I know i can get the right adaptors ( silicon joiners ) in 2.25 to 2.5 inch to come off the turbo - and a 2.5 inch to 3 inch to go in and from the intercooler, then a 3 inch to 2.5 inch reducer to the inlet manifold from the part suppliers down here ..

Do these adaptors cause any great hassles with things such as turbulance + lag that i should be aware of - and/or should the transition periods from size to size be stretched over the piping length ?

Also how should the piping go from size to size - particularly from the turbo ?

Im using stainless piping and bends - as secondary info - and claming with the higher quality hose clamps ( not radiator type )

Stick to 2.5" piping, that will be more than adequate.

In terms of aerodynamics, the best angle to reduce turbulence and hence restriction is 4 degrees (involving lengthy discussions with an expert aerodynamicist). This is often imparctical, so the best suggestion is to make the transition as long as possible, and ensure that the pipes are lines up as best as possible.

One thing that may help, is to reduce the inlet/oulet to the I/C to 2.5" by some new pipes being welded on, as this may help in positioning of pipes, cooling efficiency and ease of plumbing, and don't need another 2 of those pesky reducers.

Cheers

i was thinking the same thing - get the IC piping reduced to 2.5 inch - then its pretty much standard across the board ..

I can get stainless tapered recusers in 3 inch to 2.5 - just waiting on cooler now to see if they come off at an angle or straight

that then would only mean one reducer needed - ie from the 2 inch turbo outlet into the 2.5 inch piping that the rest runs in ..

( this would also keep costs down a shite load )

yeah, I'd tend to lose the 3" IC inlet/outlet and stick to 2.5"... 3" would be much harder (and more expensive) to run in the 185... its tight enough as it is Smile

On my car (i think I have slightly lower power goals than you), I'll be running 2.25" all the way except for the reducer on the turbo outlet.
