Show off valves

Just a couple of quick questions:
What does a show off valve do?
Can you have a show off valve on an auto turbo motor?
Do show off valves have to be so noisy, or can you get quiet ones?
Cheers

Wrong.
A BOV vents boost pressure between the turbo compressor and the intake manifold.
A WASTEGATE will make exhaust gasses bypass the exhaust wheel on the turbo thus limiting boost.
A Plumback BOV takes the pressure and puts it back into the intake piping before the compressor and is somewhat quieter as a result.

This is called a recirculating dump value. As with all dump valves they run the engine a little rich for a split second. I'm waiting for someone to bring out a dump valve emulator so that all the kids can enjoy that PPsssssttunk sound as they trash their Telstars. This would no doubt delight a lot of Honda and Mitsubishi owners as well. What do you think guys? A dump valve in combination with some sort of compressor and tank arrangment. I'm so excited that I might go put a go-faster strip on my car.........

Not if it's a MAP sensored car they don't.
I think there is already some device that goes Pssshhht when changing gears for those who want the noise without the turbo. Uber ghey.

No need to even go to this trouble. Some ricey auto parts mob in the US I think have made a fake BOV that is just a speaker with an electronic box that you wire up. Push the button and you get the 'pffffft' sound from under the bonnet of your Ford Telsta.
It goes with the neon lit chrome cannon exhuast tip.....

I'll have to get one of those for the supra cos the plumback is to quiet.
I drove a mates VL turbo last night it doesn't have a blow off but now that it has a pod filter it makes a wierd sound when you shift, it's like the back pressure is pushing back through the turbine or something
