i just offered a guy 1000 for a reg'd 86 celica, manual,sunroof, pwr windows,steer,mirrors, cntrl lock, keyless entry and so on, just a little bit of slight damage and 300000km. it's a 2l twin cam 20valve or what ever. anyway, i'd like to rebuild the car but with a more powerful 4cyl donk. what would "slide right in" like, what would take the less work for more power?

is that a GA60? with the 1g-ge? If so then i might just buy the 1g-ge off you 
As for conversions, if you already have the 1G-GE (6 cyl, 2L, twincam 24Valve) then the CHEAPEST bolt in is a 1G-GTE, which can be bought for around $800 with loom and ECU at SSS Automotive here in Sydney, or possibly in a front cut from our no.1 forums sponsor, Central Vic Auto Parts (Andrew Vibert). They are the same motor, but with two turbos!!!
Basically the 1G-GTE is the best bang for buck option. There is boundless info on this motor and the conversion here on toymods and elsewhere on the internet.

Sounds like an ST162, with a 16v 3SGE or 3SFE. A 3SGTE would be the perfect swap.

then you can have pure 2HP
