Lord of the Ringies! Fellowship of the Spirit!

One day, Hydra and Scriber were sitting in their cars up on the old freeway http://www.users.on.net/~hydra/images/toymods/oldf wy.jpg and they both had a dream... this dream involved a corolla of some form becoming the king of the old freeway. We all know that the old freeway is now somewhat... f*$ked, but we can still dream!
Anyway, not too long after dreaming this up we managed to find ourselves a fairly clean KE70 Corolla Spirit.

http://www.users.on.net/~hydra/cars/spirit/Before/ corolla03.jpg
Quite the nice example really.
It didn't take long for some "bright" ideas to pop up... suggestions from friends... Next thing I know, Shadow and Scriber have the car in Scribers garage, all masked up and ready for some paint... the result:
http://www.users.on.net/~hydra/cars/spirit/Before/ mini-spirit0001.JPG
Kansai tuning sticker donated by genkin... all those extra KW!!
Soon after this had happened, Shadow decided to show us Kypo forest (we spell it like that for no reason). While there, COROLA discovered that mud isn't only good for doughies... it's also great for "shnaps". The results can only be described in pictures:

The Fellowship of the Spirit was bourne. Hydra, Scriber, COROLA and Shadow had formed a team of crazy looneys who would thrash the sh!t out of a corolla on a certain muddy road designed for dry weather only.
Since that day, we've had our fair share of problems with the spirit. It has taken the beatings we've given it though, running without oil or coolant at times, the engine still goes strong.
We still have the crappy 4K in the engine bay, it just has a 3K carby, KE36 fuel pump, KE36 exhaust/extractors, umm... whatever else we could fix up. It runs pretty nicely, but lacks torque bigtime!
One addition that we made thanks to around $50 of mine was the tits... yes, the tits. These were put on just before our first venture to kypo from memory. The tits are a pair of lights that kinda look like tits when pressed against your chest... cept they're solid and black. Anyway, I do not know why we called them tits, but we were probably driving along in the hills and switched them on, prompting COROLA to say TITS!
Right now the Spirit is on daily driver duty since CELIXX is off the road STILL. That hasn't stopped us from heading up to Mt Crawford for the odd thrash on one of the many dirt roads... and rally tracks!
Plans for the Spirit are still up in the air... A 4A-GE is looking very high on the priority list right now though. Suspension is also up there... but the one thing we need to attend to really soon is BRAKES. Suggestions welcome!
I don't think there is much more I can say... COROLA will have more to add, and will correct me i'm sure.
The Fellowship lives on.

Ahh yes, the saga, it is a timeless family favourite!
COROLA signing in here to add his little bit.
The spirit, or the SCHPIWIT as Shadow or Scriber sometimes refer to it as, has provided great entertainment, joy, tears, pain and excitment to us four quite silly drivers. I must say, the spirit is the kind of car you own so you can do things to it, that you'd never DARE do to your daily driver, or your pride and joy. Its the kind of vehicle that will go through a 4 foot ditch, and survive. That car has seen greater pain in the last year of its ownership with us, that it would have in its whole 20 year career. Yes, that car rolled off the production line at about the same time us four gentlemen did.
So what has the spirit acheived?
As HyDrA has stated, it has *new* and improved internals. 4K block, 3k carbie, 3k fuel pump, improved dizzy, etc, all that kind of running apparatus. The spirit also has: TWO strut tower braces. (these are 1 inch tubing flattend and drilled at both ends, forced between the strut bolts) Two black 6inch racing stripes. A T-18 dash cluster with tacho (6000redline) speedo, fuel, temp, volts and oil presure gauges (gotta get a pressure sender yet!) REPLACED front struts, calipers and rotors. REPLACED rear shockies. Seat covers, carpet removed, windows sealed, sound system removed and most importantly, ONE PASSENGER JESUS BAR (handles in the roof) this bar quite useful when the spirits in it's element... being thrown to full lock in the opposite direction as it slides sideways through mud, puddles, rocks and the occasional piece of scenery.
The spirit has had many trips to its old hunting ground of kypo (kuitpo) forrest, and most importantly, the creek road. A road that runs between to ridges, collecting all the water from the surrounding pine trees. This road remains mud for a LOT of the winter. meaning traction is pretty hit and miss. Perfect constant inertia drift i think is the term. Throwing it in, and deliberately over-correcting to initiate oversteer before semi catching it again, to then repeat.
MUCHLY fun. As long as u dont push the tire off the rim. That happend once. Or as long as u dont get it bogged. That happened once, risked happening twice. Or as long as u dont dislodge the battery. That happend LOTS, and still does!!!!
but as the rains have sorta, subdued, so has the mud, and infact, the road we once loved, is F**KED. Potholes, ruts, ditches, dead kangaroos. its not nice. so we kinda, have lost the love. Thats where crawford came in.
One night, a trip was planned, on positive word from Shadow of the rally roads through the forrest, we decided to test it out. Heading up spirit and XF falcon ute in check (Shadows vehicle, quite rugged) we found the dirt fun plenteful and exciting. Not of the same type of kypo, but deffinatly a challenge. after a thermos of coffee, a few fotos, and shadow backing his ute up onto a bloody big rock. We left, promising to return.
However. From that time onwards, ther spirit was falling apart. Needed by HyDrA to get to work each day took it's toll on the old girl, the brakes hardly worked, the suspension was SHOT and the exhaust fell off. (well, not fell off, there was only a bit of 2.5 inch pipe, but it came loose) some serious work needed to be done. hence, new parts being installed. it was much better.
This 'damaged' phase went on for quite some time, so we were ITCHING to get back to the dirt. finally, it was repaied, and we've been going back to the forrest(s) every weekend since.
Now, i dont think there's anything i've forgotten. But if you read all that, u must be as mad as the four of us are.
Whats a good car memory of my life so far? Watching the spirit, SIX lights blazing, at 400m flying sideways over a crest before sharply schapping down through the mud towards me, Revs well above 5000, in the bitter cold night and misting rain, on a certain un-named road in the middle of no-where.
Ahh, the mud.

I wanna put that 3k head on soon... I just need the spare time to get it down to a shop to get it machined. Oh, gotta find a gasket set too, supercrap didnt have any!

I hope we can crawford tonight! It all depends on my body, and how sick it feels. Woke up thismorning with a dry mouth... on top of the headache, soreness, coughing, nose running... at least my nose wasnt bleeding!
The spirit needs a clean atm, it has caked on mud... I get strange looks

We need a dimmer on the interior light of the spirit.
Yeh that gingerbeer is killing me!
The paint may be stained, but that just adds to the character. Oh, the bonnet is no longer as white as it was... it had a very dirty and oily rag rubbed over it.
You wanna crawford tonight? I don't know if we will be... depends on how sick i am.

Yeh do it!
Plus it's so easy to get replacement parts for the car... and cheap!! We often find ourselves replacing bits with parts from wrecked cars at upullit... on the sunday after a nights thrashing. I think the next item may well be a gearbox, we've almost killed the current one. The diff is getting a bit crappy too, it feels as though it only powers one wheel at any time....

YARR avast the Fellowship of the Spirit
Yes the mighty spirit when i first saw it was a folorn looking plain white KE70 Spirit, with cow print seat covers. Bodywise, she was ok, but the engine.... well, it ran.
Just.
A quick trip around the block with scriber and hydra getting whiplash from the bunny hopping, it was soon discovered that the timing was out to the shithouse.
SO,
return to Hydra's place, rip up the bonnet and go to work. After guesstimating that the timing was about that much out, i proceeded to undo the securing bolt and wind the distributor back about half a turn.
Retighten bolt, throw bonnet shut, jump in, and off we go
Well, talk about a difference. That expert timing job got it from being a bunny hopping white piece of junk to white lightening, the smooth, sleek rocket that it is.
Later that night as mentioned before, scriber and myself attacked it with a wad of newspaper, some masking tape and a tin of high gloss black paint.
End result... Spirit with attitude! How 2 big fat GT stripes up the bonnet, over the roof and down the boot can make a difference is amazing.
High spirits were abound after the GT stripe episode, and thoughts soon turned to exhaust noise. Or appropriate lack thereof as it were.
No dramas, up to my place and out comes the handy hacksaw (how handy) and off comes the back muffler. Wonderful! We now had GT stripes AND noise! There was just one problem. Lack of mounting brackets and basically F@*%ed exhaust system! Sure enough, well into the wee hours of the night on a sojurn thru the hills, the rest of the exhaust fell off. Bugga. No dramas, pull over in the rain, rip the bastard off, throw it in the boot and burn home.
Next day, down to profix. New manifold flange gasket, welded up join, and a 2.5" tip section and $60 less and she was all fixed. The exhaust bloke told us it would be stupidly loud with only 1 pissy little muffler, and oh how he was right!!
From that day on, the more revs and the more noise the better!
After that episode, my input into the spirit sadly declined as i had to move interstate for uni.
Anyway, i still get to drive it occassionaly, and its still a beast!
LONG LIVE THE LORD OF THE RINGIES - FELLOWSHIP OF THE SPIRIT!!!
