Sad news out of Toyota regarding the Celica.

As of the 2005 the Celica (and MR-S) will no longer be imported for sale in the US.
Sad
Apparently, there is too much competition for the Celica to survive (internally with the Tc and externally).
Apparently a 170HP Corolla and Corolla wagon (Matrix) are as sporty as the Toyota lineup is going to be in the near future...

They are still continuing in Japan as far as anyone knows. Rolling Eyes

Why would a US cancellation affect us seen we don't even get half the cars they do.

The US cancelation is due to the vehicles no longer meeting emmissions laws in the Us toyota can't be bothered redisigning the engines to comply. It affects us as there is talk that they may stop building them

That's a load of crap. The 1ZZ and 2ZZ were specifically designed to meet Californian emissions standards.

Crap hey maybe you should read motor as that is the reason they gave, the emmission laws have been chnaged and thus they don't meet the current regulations

Hi,

Crikey, I thought the Celica range died after 1977! Smile

I said it before and I'll say it again - hold onto your old classics.

I guess Motor magazine should tell Lotus about this then. Since Lotus just redesigned the Elise to use the 2ZZ-GE for the simple fact that they had to get an engine that would be fully emissions legal in the US.

I suppose Lotus stuffed up and now wont be able to sell the left hand drive cars they've designed. Sounds a little unlikely to me.

Does Motor specify in what way emissions laws have been changed that makes the 1ZZ and 2ZZ no longer comply?

I've read most MOTOR magazines cover to cover line for line. No where have I read that they said the 1ZZFE and 2ZZGE don't meet emissions laws. Example the Lotus Elise as mentioned that was allowed into the US BECAUSE it was using an legal emissions engine.

Lets not forget the Matrix and the Corolla using the same engines which will continue to be sold.

It's all about sales, not emissions. SUVs are the status symbol these days, not sports cars.

Except when it comes to cars, the rest of the world seems to pretty much disregard what they do...the successful ones do anyway.
