Cheap 18R Weber adapter?

Hiyas
Norbie reckons there's an uber cheap adapter plate available for the carby 18R/18RC to run a Weber carb. Can anyone provide more details on:
* what carb do I want (I think 32/36 but have no idea what I'm talking about)
* what exact model is it from (I think maybe some kinda Falcon but again no idea)
* what they're worth
* where to get the adapter
* what the adapter costs
* what other shit (throttle linkages, air filter setup, etc)
Best I've found thus far is this link but shagged if I'm paying anything like that.

scour the wreckes for adaptor - there seemed to be two kinds for 18R manifolds lat time <people100> and i went to ABC wacol to look for stuff - smallish is for denso carbi, larger is suitable for webber.
linkages will be DIY unless you want to pay serious cash. If you want to see how my RA40 was converted to cable, PM me to setup a meeting at Kenmore.
a webber from a 2litre cortina might be a good start - anything larger will simply assist you in wasting petrol, spark plugs and the top compression ring - as well as giving those travelling behind you an unhealthy cloud of unburnt petrol to drive thru.
but ... why are you looking at improving the performance of a truck motor?
havlng already been down this path, i'd suggest you save your penney's to buy a proper engine -at leat an 18RG or even (dare i say it) 21 or 22 RE... infact , anything with EFI will be an improvement on the 18R.
granted, the 18R is hard to kill but without wasting large amounts of cash (like i've done) you'll not be satisfied with your efforts.
if you want to improve reliability, change the points to electric or jaycar HEI, clean the cooling system properely and bolt on any 4cyl webber that you can steal from a 2 litre engine
my 2c,
Charles.

I put a 34ADM weber off a Falcon on my 18R.
Made my own adaptor plate for it.
Made a big difference and was very worth the $50 to do it.
And thechuckster is correct, there are two different size manifold to carb mounts.
From memory the 18RC has a larger mounting area and bolt spacing than the 18R.

Contact Celica28 on this forum.
I sold him a 36DGV Weber off a Falcon along with a Redline carby adapter and manifold to suit an 18R, a few months ago. I don't know if he still has this gear. He is located in Canberra.
I was going to fit all this to my 18R in he RA23, but along came a 1G-GZE, and that was the end of my 18R thoughts !
Cheers,
Mitch.

If I'm not mistaken Leigh's 18R is currently sans carby, and he's looking for a less complicated carby to bolt onto it (ie without the messy emissions stuff that comes with the 18R carby). I'd heard of these Weber adapters so I thought that might be a good idea, but I agree that one shouldn't spend any significant amount of money on an 18R.
Leigh, if you can't find an adapter off the shelf I reckon RZ Pete will make you one for a carton of beer.

I got my 32/36 from ebay for $50. Sourced from a running 2ltr escort. Things like wether the carby has a idle fuel cut solenoid and also the type of choke its got is a good way to judge its origin.
Also I just chucked the carby straight on my 21R. Bought a redline carby adaptor (poor build quality), runs rather well, only problem is it runs on a bit after a drive.
Cheers,
James

7M-Brisbane wrote on Tue, 14 September 2004 15:07 | Now I just need to know what model of car to get the carby from - I've so far heard Escort, Cortina and Falcon... surely they didn't all use the exact same carburettor across the entire model range! Details people details!
What model Falcon/Cortina/Escort (there are engines from 1300cc to 5700cc in this range!) and how do I know I'm getting the right one (are there any markings)?
|
we had a TC cortina wagon with a 2litre OHC crossflow engine - had 2bbl webber with vacuum secondary solenoid to cut idle fuel when engien powered off. auto choke was plumbed up to cooling system so was dumped in favour of manual choke.
don't bother about model of car, go for engine size - 2 litre.

The 2 litre Escorts and Cortinas run the DGV32/36. The XE-F Falcon runs a 34 ADM.

*Mr Burns voice* Eeeeexcellent.
I shall go shopping tomorrow, I know there are a few Escorts (of the automobile variety) at ABC in Oxley so hopefully one will be 2ltr and still have the carb
Alteratively if anyone in Brisbane has one, let me know (not interested in interstate purchase).

Good luck, these carbs normally dont last long in wrecking yards.
Out of ~20 XE-F Falcons at my local wrecker, only one still had the 34ADM i was after.
Was quite lucky to find one really.

Yeah, I found two 4cyl cortinas but both were without engines. The two Eskys weren't yet deflowered but unfortunately were 1300cc and 1600cc each
I'll hunt again tomorrow

go to aussie auto at mt gravatt, they have a small box of assorted lynx stuff, i know they had a 'corona weber adaptor" for sale, its all "make an offer",
failing that, go to progas at didswith st wooloongabba, their business is carbs and LPG, they even sell new webers.

Yeah, my first car was an RT104 so I'll always have a soft spot for them. It's a bit of a money pit already but should provide good reliability as a result - my old one was a POS and didn't break down once, so I'm hoping this one will provide similar service!
I picked this particular one because it was the only one I could find with air conditioning and only a small amount of rust. While the body is (very) average with minor accident damage and scratches, there is no major rust and this is the main problem with the RT104 so I'm quite happy with it.
In fact the body is so rough that a mate bet me a carton of Coronas that I'd lose interest and never register it... so I'm actually giving this thing preference over my 'real' project car at the moment!
Picked up a manifold adapter at Autobarn the other day, and got most of the bits I need to get the thing back together.
Thanks for the lead on progas, will speak to them about the carb if I need to get bits for the carby reco.
