Well mine was black wrinkle finish with raised silver lines, looks nice. Ed's one was very effective too.

Wrinkle paint not setting the same...not cleaning it properly makes the paint not adhere properly...doing the raised (or sunken) letters and lines can be a pain to get right.

I painted my Cam covers on my 4agze, and it was kinda difficult because unlike on the 4age covers, the text 'Toyota' and 'twin cam supercharged' is sunken, not raised.
I wanted to paint the text different to the actual covers so what i had to do was paint the whole covers with the colour that i wanted the text, then I used Bluetac and fill the painted text (very painfull procedure). Then i painted the covers, then removed the bluetac. In the end it looks fairly good. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Hehe, been there done that too Just be careful with it, the lumps in it tend to be little gas pockets, and some of the stuff that got REALLY hot (in car dash) popped.

A good ol sand blaster set at a low pressure can give a nice surface prep for painting aluminuium. Just make sure the sand doesnt remain on any of the inside of the covers before refitting !

Give them to someone who gets paid for it, get them to strip it and then polish them. Mate just had his 18RG cam covers done and they look awesome (cost $100)
I have 4AGZE covers so cant really comment. I just got stuck into them with mag wheel polish and they look better than a painted job (in my opinion)

i am plann ing on just wrinkle finishing the whole lot, then using a big file to get the raised letters shiny again.

i will be reading ed's thread for starters

You're probably better off just useing a rag dipped in thinners to remove the paint from the raised parts before it dries.

the easiest way to paint the letters is to spray paint into the lid of the spray can and then manually paint it on. or you could buy acrylic model painting stuff

Cool... Well, don't forget to let me know. My number is 0403 348 138 just incase.
I saw an AE86 with 20V in Option mag ages ago before I bought my car and it looked so good. That's why I asked. Coincidence that you picked the same scheme (red sides with silver middle) too! Can't wait to see what she spits out on the rollers and maybe even have a bit of a comparo on some back roads

Sorry dude, didn't realise there was all these replies! I found a stanley blade in the end very good for removing the paint, cos it's all plasticky.
I used the VHT stuff, for an even finish you have two options, a nice hot sunny day works well. An oven also works well too. The hotter you go, the tinier the wrinkles become, and you go from a wrinkly finish to a weird look. Both look cool, but make sure you do the same to both!
Follow the instructions on the can, one THICK base coat (not so thick it runs) in one direction, then abount 4 light coats at 90 degrees each time. Comes up mint.

i used heat proof spray paint. once this is baked on it has a very strong finish. makes it very hard to chip, stain, burn, etc.
just make sure u clean the oil off the inside of the covers before baking them
