Hey all, how do I undo the bolt on the crank pulley while the engine is on a stand? Is there some place I can brace so it doesnt move the whole crank? On a 1ggte btw.
Help appreciated.
Cheers.

if the flywheel is still on then use something to lock the fly in place so it doesnt turn.
OR
put a solid pole through the pulley (between the holes) and while pushing pole clockwise, use breaker bar and socket and turn anti-clockwise - have someone help you for extra strength
OR
if you can get your hands on a rattle/impact gun then no need to say anything else
thats all i can think of for now

im guessing you dont have a rattle gun..
so
1 - take sump off and
2 - take engine off stand and place on floor (on say a spare tyre)
3 - wedge a piece of wood between the the #1 cyl crank counterweight and the block.
4 - get socket + breaker bar + long piece of pipe
5 - get friend to stabilise engine on floor
6 - PULL on breaker bar/pipe
i prefer this method to others where you secure the crank by the flywheel, or flywheel mounting bolts etc - this minimises twisting of the crank.

thanks for the reply, but
1. Flywheel is not on
2. pulley wheel is solid, no holes
3. no impact gun :/

-get very long length of rope
-attach something strong to engine that has large loop/hole
-tie one end of rope to overhead beam
- loop rope from beam to loop and back over the beam a number of times
you now have a primitive pulley and the means to lower the engine

use a breaker bar and appropriate socket, havee ure mate hold the pulley as best he can. get a big wooden mallet or plastic mallet, and whaaam give it a short sharp hard hit. the sudden force is usually enough to release it.
hope it works, this usually does.

I've done it the same way with the motor still on the stand by myself, but it was on a 3t. I don't how it'd go with a longer motor.

strap wrench - make it from an old belt, a loop nailed/bolted to the end of a piece of wood. it's self tightening, the harder you turn the tighter it gets, and a 3cm x 3cm x 1m would do great if there isn't a space limitation.

Ahh I remember doing this, but in the car.
We managed to remove it using a 22mm? socket, breaker bar, and 6 foot length of tubing. Took a good hour of persistance but we eventually got it loose... what a bastard of a thing. Next time, I just used the old crank it over method... much better.
Now i've got access to a rattle gun... I cant wait to have to try again now
Rattle guns are pretty cheap, and a compressor can be had cheaply too... it just wont have much capacity.

well its really stuck, I managed to get 2 flywheel bolts in and jammed a big screwdriver between them (I used an old spanner first, but it snapped) and used a breaker bar with a 4 foot extension, put some supports (bits of wood) under the front of the engine to support me swinging on the bar. but it wouldnt budge, I put alot of weight into it but no luck. Everything was goign great till this snag lol. Guess i will hire a rattle gun on the weekend.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I had a lot of trouble with my 21r crank pulley bolt. Managed to break two rattle gun sockets...
Long story short, just got out the oxy torch, and melted the bolt out. It wrecked the rubber on the pulley, but meh, was desperate.

gee must be tight
u should only need to put 2 flywheel bolts in and wedge something between them
then get a braker bar about 50cm long 1/2" socket and undo
if that doesnt get it it could be rusted on be carefull getting it off as u might brake the head of the bolt off

Engine 5SFE.
Crank pulley bolt:
After consulting the Haynes manual I bent 1 screwdriver and broke 2 12 point sockets and a 6 point socket.
Tried the WD-40 leave it for days, with a 58cm breaker bar (now with impact socket) and now with my wife on the brake instead of trying to stop the turning with a screwdriver.
Didn't work.
Tried to heat it with a propane torch then use same breaker bar. Didn't work.
Got a 500 ft-lb 3/4" impact wrench. Got it off, but took some seconds to loosen (so don't give up immediately).
Crank pulley:
Tried a 3 arm gear puller. Broke the front lip of the pulley.
Tried a pry bar behind the pulley but it broke the rear pulley lip.
Finally got a "Universal Pulley Puller" but wasn't universal as it didn't have the 6mm (I think) bolts required for the pulley. Got some old carby retainer bolts which did the job.
Now all I need is a new pulley.
I hope this helps anyone trying to so this as the advice I got on this site helped me.
