Apparently the story went that the family name was Toyoda... They originally started out with the Toyoda family Automatic Loom works. The family then expanded into designing and producing cars and trucks. It was around the end of 1936 they decided to change the company name from Toyoda to Toyota.
The reason is because Toyota is easier to pronounce internationally, and also because the name is written in Katakana and it has exactly 8 strokes, and 8 is considered a lucky number in Japan. If Toyota is written in hiragana it has a different number of strokes. Also, the family name Toyoda is written differently with a different number of strokes too.

I did some serious research into the history of the Toyoda/Toyota company a little while back... I basically compressed a shitload of what I found into what I posted there.

That's right... I knew there was a good reason it was only written in katakana but I couldn't remember what it was.
I don't know much about the Japanese language.
