Ford AU Twin Thermo's Thu, 30 September 2004 06:06 Go to next message
Anybody know how much current AU fans draw?

Here is the result of mine.

http://oz-enet.com.au/~peewee/fuse_1.jpg

http://oz-enet.com.au/~peewee/fuse_2.jpg

Fans were running for about 2 mins MAX.

I currently have one 40A relay, and a 25A fuse powering these.

Should I convert to separate relays and fuses for each?

Cheers

oops!!

DC fans pull
12" = 9amps
14" = 11amps
16" = 19amps Shocked
they say these are maximum current, but not if it's continuous maximum.. the peak current on starting might be a lot higher..

do you have a multimeter that can take 20amps? connect inline and see?

That is unreal!!!

I have a 25amp on one 14" Davies Craig thermo fan, is this alright? it hasn't blown yet but I hope it isn't too big?

going by oldcorollas recomendation, i'd say its too big
if what old doc says is true...then downsize to a 15A fuse

Well, they are 12.5-13" fans.

And no, I don't have a 20A DMM only a 10A.

I have now converted to 8guage power wire (bout to go buy the fuse holder), a twin input/output relay, and wired both power and earth for each fan independantly.

So it should be all good.

Previous was a 12" Davies Craig fan with a 10A fuse, and that was what came in the pack.

well if the amps he listed are for startup then a 10A fuse should be more than enough. 9A seems like alot of current draw for a pissy little 12" fan to continuously draw

another thing to look out for is

when u buy thermo fans

no matter how big the thermo they supply the same fuse holder

when u start running twin fans or similar i hVE COME ACROSS THE FUSE HOLDERS MELTING TOO

thats y i always use 30 amp fuse holders

The amps he listed is for running.
Its about 6 times FLC on startup.
But its only for a fraction of a second.

But I now have a 60A fuse holder, and a 40A fuse.
So it *should* all be good

Ok, these thermo's ROCK

Let the car warm up to half way between normal and hot (3/4ish on the guage).
Laptop read out was 100degC.

Turned the thermo's on, the guage dropped back to normal in about 10 secs, and the laptop temp went down to 88 over about 2 mins.

Highly recommended

wow... i did the melted fuse thing with a 16" Davies Craig ... happened on bloody hot brisbane summer's day so i had to drive home in 5 minute hops.

it was 20 amp fuse in the socket that came with the fan... i'll have to photo it now Wink

I did the same thing with the fuse to my fuel pump in the Corolla - damned cheap flimsy Dick Smith fuseholder and fuse = bad news.. And that was only a smallish fuel pump..
