icon9.gif  HELP ! Sun, 10 October 2004 07:20 Go to next message
Went for a cruise around williamstown then when i got back to a mates house and we came back out to the car i noticed a nice stream of red coolent on the ground. i filled the radiator up and limped it home but i cant find exactly where the leak it :S.

the engine is a 4age in sprinter and the leak is on the left hand side if looking into the engine bay from the front the coolent is running down and along the side of the sump but i cant locate the full leak itself, where are common spots for this to happen ??

and if there is anyone around werribee area that might be able to help me anyhelp would be great cheers

I had a real hassle of a coolant leak like this. Only applicable if your engine has a FWD water pump on it though. There's an o-ring sealing between the main body of the water pump, and the steel pipe that comes out the back of it and runs along the side of the block. That o-ring had got too old and hard on mine and no longer sealed.

If it's a RWD pump, I'm out of ideas.

Best bet is to pull stuff apart until you find it leaking. It is helpful to use one of those pumps to pressurise your radiator without having the car running. All workshops should have one.

I just used a normal o-ring that I found somewhere (try your shed, Bunnings, or another hardware). It was (almost) the right size and hasn't bothered me since.

Of course, it may not be your current problem, so have a bit or a dig around before you go investing 7c in that o-ring.
