E-Bay car scam?? Any ideas? Sat, 16 October 2004 15:57 Go to next message
Check out the most recent listings in the cars section on ebay, there's like 8 expensive vehicles selling for rediculously low prices! For example,

$8000 Evo VIII Lancer?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&a mp;a mp;a mp;category=18230&item=2495002621&rd=1

$10000 MY04 BMW M5 Convertible?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&a mp;a mp;a mp;category=84599&item=2495007519&rd=1

$10000 MY00 Porsche Carrera 911?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&a mp;a mp;a mp;category=35227&item=2495012628&rd=1

In some of the descriptions the cars don't match the pictures. Some have european plates. The sellers all have good histories, but have sold mainly items of little value in 1 or 2 day auctions - typical way for scammers to build a history. Most auctions are locked, requiring the bidders to contact them before bidding. All the auctions are from different sellers, but the format seems to be the same in all of them - so its obviously the same person.

I smell a scam... any ideas what they're playing at?

report it to ebay, they're pretty good at stopping scams / pirated shit etc.

edit: or 'buy' all three cars, harassing the sellers Wink

edit2: upon further inspections, all of them are UK ebay members (Check the feedback auctions) UK scam of some sort.. could be related to this

Yeah, it looks like they've deleted those - but the guy is still at it ->

Apparently the seller is a soldier and can get the cars shipped here from the UK in 4 days? Payment is to be made by using something called 'Square trade'.
Quote:

Square Trade here are their terms:
>1) If you will not receive the car not as advertised,Square Trade will refund you the whole amount which you paid me(100 %).In case that you will not receive the car, they will refund you the money back from my account.
>
>2) You can send the money to my name and address but you will not provide me the details of the payment. You will provide the details to Square Trade. They will verify the payment and if is ok,and the money are availble under my name they will notify me to procede with the shipping. After you receive and see that the car is the one you want, you just notify Square Trade to forward me the payment details in order for me to pick up my money.

So obviously the deal is that some sucker deposits the money then he just disappears without a trace.
