theres another thread about the safety 21 and other stuff which entails good cage design simmo
your best bet is thru the firewall into the front towers and run 2 main hoops (front and behind front seats, with side intrusion bars, roof cross bars to join the hoops, b pillar brace and a rear tower struts with a cross and a c pillar brace (similar position to a aspec brace, but welded in)
that wouls be heavy and costly tho. and even more costly for cams compliant cages.

Joyride that looks like pics of the car option 1 was wrecking? I dont see any probs with bolt in cages mines a pain in the ass i have to unbolt the front leg on the drivers side to access the dash, but its bolted in properly so all will be good if there ever was a roll over

I figured a easy explanation out for that Simon , after are chat "The cage which braces the cage" tm .
As for those top secret trd cage pics keep them to yourself, you too Garth .
But i will give a bit of common knowledge to people building cages for track . There is loads of info on building cages for anykind of racing out there , but most importantly check the spec for the class of racing you are going to do . I know a very nice bm with one of the best cage i have everseen , a e30 m3 with a touring car copy cage , improved in lots of areas buy a V8 supercar engineer . But guess what it is too reinforced to get the car into the intended class which it was going to be used . So do check all the relevant cams information before going about doing it all wrong .
As for normal track day stuff , the problem i most see is people getting coned by cage builders into $3500>$6000 cages
For basic track work it is easy to go over bored with hugely braced heavy cages in a relatively slow underpowered car . Far better judging the speed of the vehicle and its intended use and looking at other cars in that range and seeing what is only needed .
As for ae86 cage design there is so much information on where the ae86 flexes , what the cages look like in all the race n2 cars etc . Is the Ae86 such a weak chassis ? does it really need lots of heavy bracing , or big tubing ? All this is adding to the weight , and making the center of gravity much higher if adding large roof cross bracing . What is the use of just heavily reinforcing the areas where the cage mounts , this is old school style cage design . Now people make the cage into the body as much as possible , to get the most benefit in strength and weight .

still, that particular car is in the process of having a 500hp sr20 installed into it, the power there deems an over engineered cage for safety, simon seems to think there is some sort of design flaw here, and im not really sure what he's getting at...

Heh heh ... yep, that's the car which Shane stripped in Japan ...
As for Brett's car with the SR20 to go in, I believe it's already been wired up and is in the process of rego - will have to see what his comments are re how effective his cage is.
Anyway, I'll be welding a rollcage into my other 86 sometime in the near future - you're right in that getting a CAMS approved cage = major $$$.
Someone's already agreed to weld one for me cheap but I've got to check with an engineer to see what is required to get one engineered here in Queensland.
Might as well post the pic of Josh's and Shane's handiwork as well while we're at it:

Simon,
Did your cage have to be CAMS approved for the drift events you enter?
Cheers,
Jeremy.

What is that being built for ? Must be some-kind of nascar event , i didn't think having the front uprights mounting onto corners of the roof tubing is aloud in any kind of motorsport here . Funny to see power steering in a caged ae86 to As well as a auto tunnel by the looks .

Not really rating that T3 cage at all, shouldn't need to cut the roof off for the cage. Also seems to cut a lot of forward vision and takes up a bit more interior space than it should.
For serious cage building, the rally guys really know where its at. Couple of interesting (but not 86) links to have a look at from Finland.

Hopefully these work, my computer is not letting me view them at the moment.
