what happens if someone get a car from their parent, do they still need to pay for the vehicle duty?

Not sure about melbourne, but in QLD there is a minimum amount that you have to say you bought the car for like $500 or $1000 or something if you are transfering rego, all I did was get my parents to say I bought it for $1000 then the duty is a percentage of that, was next to nothing.
