lately i've been getting lots of comments from passengeres about the rattles in my car being lounder than the music and exhuast, that aint right!
how's everyone else de-reattle their old beasts
i've been removing all the 'luxury' items like centre console and the shelf and im thinking about taking out the 2 big plastic covers at the bottom of hatch and the back of car, theyre pretty dam rattly
so if it rattles, take it out?
this is obviously only going to go so far until my car looks like its living in a wrecking yard

How bout finding the rattling bits and glue some chopped up sponge/foam in there to see if it stops it?
Might be more asthetically pleasing than self tappers.

That is one of the most annoying things with old cars... All the plastic bits start to get loose.
I have eliminated all but the bootlid spring and something in the rooflining that rattles when the sub goes. It is a total bitch to track them all down.

I had a datsun 1200 coupe and the boot lid rattled that much that it would pop open if I turned the music up to much

Yeah the rattles are a bitch, be prepared to spend countless hours pulling interiors apart screwing back together only to have the same or another noise appear.
Alot of noises can be cured by placing a thin layer of foam between the metal and the interior panel (plus added sound proofing). the metal push plugs similar to that used in early door trims wear through the plastic inserts that can be easily replaced with new inserts.
If it rattles it, or somthing holding, screwed, glued to it is worn out and needs renewing, not necessarily removal. Over time the bigger rattles can be eliminated and you can sort through the smaller less annoying noises. And those pesky noises that only appear at 3500rpm and driving at 110km/h that just s#@t me

I had a terrible rattle from the instrument binnacle of my MR2. I pulled the cover off and spayed the inside with bdoy deadener including all of the area's where it buts up against other trim but not on the screw down points. Now it doesn't make a sound.
This work for two reasons:
- It added more tension to the screws as the point of contact with other trim was moved out further
- It added mass to the part that was vibrating wich changes the resonant frequency as well as making it require more energy to move the component
Of course you can use proper interior insulation either sheets or spray on stuff for this, I only used body deadener because I had a can laying around from tidying up my engine conversion.

I've got this problem with my MKIII.
There is a rattle in the rear, took the whole boot plastic appart went for a drive. It was still there. So when I took it to the mechanic for a tune-up I told him about it. Dont know what he did but the noise was gone. After an hour of driving the noise started to come back, due to pot holes and gap's in the asphalt. Roads in the Hills District's fucking suck.
Otherwise, there are vibes around passenger door, dash plastic, buzzing electrical noise under the steering wheel... and so on an so forth.
I would love to fix them but that would require a garage spot and a couple of weeks of searching (a re-build basicaly). Something wolf is pov about with time and money.
This has taught me to investigate where and how the car has been driven before I buy it.

I wanna put stuff in my boot to stop some of the exhaust noise...
I was thinking... cheapo ex-clothes soundproofing material... or proper underlay stuff... or the spray on stuff which works best...

I've more rattles in my car than the toys department at Target. Given up within 3 months of ownership. one leads to another and another and another......just make sure it ain't from the engine and you're fine mate!

What a relief to know everyone has the same problem!
Some of the noises my Sprinter makes drive me nuts - like the constant rattle at any speed that I lived with for 2 months, until the mechanic worked out it was loose handbrake cables - tightened 'em up and thank God it went away. Still got a rattle/vibration that crops up around 3000 - 3200 rpm in all gears. Still, I can live with that one.

Silicone is your friend, unscrew the rattly bit, whack a bit of silicone under there and screw the now non-rattly bit back down. Works a treat

I got plenty of rattles.
AE86s with stiff shocks, springs/coilovers, stretched tyres will do that.
