MX83 Timing Belt Wed, 10 November 2004 11:39 Go to next message
I've just picked up a '91 Cressida that's done 155,000km and I don't know any of the history of the car.

How do I know whether the timing belt needs to be replaced?

It idles OK, but I do get a vibration that I feel through the seat when idling. Plus it seems to be down on power.

I did notice today that bubbles were coming up in the overflow reservoir. It hasn't been over heating. Do I really want to know what this means???

Sounds lika a blown head gasket. My 7mge was running perfect withb 240000 on it,pulled it out a month ago to fit a 1j and manual. It is available cheap in Brisbane.
You probably have the option of repair or replace.Occasionally someone gives one away on this forum.Where are you? perhaps ask for a 7m in "wanted".you might get a good one close to home for 4 or 5 hundred.Or repair yours.
Best of Luck.Check out toyotacressida.com cheers.Pete.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in Melb.

I got a quote on repairing the BHG, they said it would be a max of $1,300. Just depends what they find when they pull it apart. She still drives fine (I've stopped driving now), so I suppose that the head is still OK.

The oil has been in the car for nearly 10k and it still looks clean - another good sign??

I rremember reading that the solution to head gasket woes with the 7mge involved fitting the right gasket and doing the head bolts up quite tight.
please do some research on toyotacressida.com and become informed.
to me $1300 would mean "get the spanners out" but if you have to get a shop to fix it being informed may help you get a better result.
cheers.pete.
