1977 RA28 Toyota celica - The Great Rebuild Sat, 13 November 2004 03:28 Go to next message
Well after much hard work and many tears, my celica is finally getting ready for completion.
I have updated pics on my webspace http://www.users.tpg.com.au/rockguru/pictures/Fram eSet.htm

This celica was bought 7 years ago, done up, then written off and I am rebuilding it again.
It has an 18RGU engine that had $5,500 spend on it and has been stripped to a bare shell and rebuilt from the ground up. It has had all the rust removed and ready to be repainted in "Ford Phantom" purple. This site is being updated weekly and it will be out of the Panelbeaters in 3 weeks.
I have added some pics from before, from the crash and the rebuild.

The driving lights took the impact of the collison. They are deadset goooooonnneee. The wheels are Neills wheels. Handmade and hard to get apparently. I am rechroming the outsides of the wheels and the Gold centres. The deep dish wheels place more strain on the diff, but a Ford 9 - inch should fix that.
I know this is a stupid question, but how do i post the pics that i have ??
Also,
If anybody has any ideas for me then they would be much appreciated as i am starting from the bare shell again.

After just over a year the celica rolled out of the panel beaters. All Gosford Smash did a great job and the colour looks awesome. Try cut all the rust out, double welded the engine bay, rebuilt the car, sprayed it, and got all the dints out.
The next step is putting it all back together.
I have included some pics -

Looking very good mate! When you expect it to be back on the road?

Did All Gosford Smash do it for a reasonable price?

Cheers
Joel

Joel,
All Gosford did all the work plus the re-spray for $3000. I thought this was really good. I am hoping to have her on the road in February. I am taking 4 weeks off work to put her back together, and to get the engine put back in, get alarms, stereo, wiring and new trims.
I am hoping for February but i am not sure whether this is a little ambitious.

Time for an update.
After towing it from the Panel Beaters she was off home to have a wax, and try to get out the Fish oil smell. Then off to Gosford Clutch and Brake for all new metal lines and Braided Hoses. (a slightly expensive excercise). Now the engine is at the mechanics with the gearbox ready for a checkup then for the install. Can anybody post any photos of an RA28/23 engine bay with an 18rg/u, with the engine out. I am having trouble remembering where everything goes.

Hi mate, good to hear its coming along! Is Paul looking after the engine? I was talking to him and he mentioned a RA28 was coming in.

My old man was having troubles finding someone to respray his landcruiser so I told him to go see All Gosford Smash repairs and they gave him an unreal quote (half of what a lot of other places quoted) and said they seemed really professional and good to deal with.

You still happy with the paint on it??

Cheers
Joel

Hey mate i know what its like havein to start from a bare shell again coz we did that with my 77 ra40 liftback.
Its a painfull proccess i know.... took a year or more of mine off the road to get her fixed up (dints out) bare metal, pimered, sanded,
then 2paked in metallic blue with a black middle section up the bonnet....
i think youve done pritty well though she looks like a machine now....!!!!
i have an 18rg but without the u (18rg-u) so if you want some pics of that ill see what i can do...???? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Very nice finish on this car. Wheels are great, what size rim and tyre are they. The flares are a nice tough look, though someone said to get rid of them, If you are going to I want to buy them off you, an advance notice for you.Where did you get them from? I have a link below to my rebuild ra28 which has an engine bay photo for you.Keep us updated.

Another Update.
After 3 months things have progressed slowly, but progressed nonetherless. It is presently still at the mechanics, with work on the engine. The engine bay is all wired thanks to the guys at "Gosford Performance Exhausts & Intercooling ", and after draining the fuel tank of five year old Optimax (very smelly), got a dose of Vortex 98. Then after 5 years we tried to start her. She fired first go, but didnt want to run. So after 1 can of Carby cleaner, she is off to get a carby kit and we will try and strt her again next week. "Gosford Dyno Tune are the mechanics and do a great job. (Shameless plug).

Time for another update.
Well after 4 1/2 years. She starts. She roared to life last week and sent chills up my spine. She sounds awesome. All she needs is a new accelerator cable, a bonnet cable, and the heater fixed and she is off home to be put back together. Things are looking up now.
The flares were already on it, so i am not sure where they came from.
