I think he needs the whole body/build number thingo
Which would look something like
E-JZX81-BLMQF or similar.
*ABOVE IS NOT A REAL NUMBER*

What parts do you need ???
Are you speaking to a Toyota Dealer ???
All the factory JZX81/JZS147/MX83 parts I have purchase for my conversion didn't need a chassis number - but then again, I did have the help of a enthusiastic and helpful spare parts guy at my local dealership.
They *CAN* look it up without a chassis number - I feel the guy you are speaking to is being lazy / difficult. All I every gave them was the Model code and the Engine Code.
ie, (JZX81 & 1JZGTE) or (JZS147 & 2JZGTE)
Having said that - I have access to the full Electronic Toyota Parts database system, - but that is only accessible via Chassis number

Hrmm... These JZX81's are really nice, I wonder if it would be a headache to put a manual in one?

to change it to manual, you can use the pedal box from a manual 1g GX81 chaser along with the shifter trim etc, then the usual R154, clutch, flywheel etc, tailshaft mod, and bash the trans tunnel for box clearance.
In the jzx81 you will also have to change the handbrake from the pedal operated type to the traditional handbrake assemby behind the shifter as the floor mounted park brake bolts to the clutch master location at the top of it's pedal.
That's the short version, I'll post some pics of my chaser conversion later in the week.
It looks pretty sad at the moment
