I heard it mentioned on another thread that when you change 1uz oil sumps (say from mid to rear) then you also need to change dipsticks, as the oil levels change.

I was wondering if the same is true of a 1jz. I've got a supra 1jz with a chaser sump on it, and I'm fairly certain the dipstick etc is all from the supra 1jz.

They have totally different length dipsticks and tubes.

I have both sumps on the shelf and was amazed that there was a difference.

ah.
er.. hrm. crap.

do you know which would read higher on the dipstick?

'cause if the supra one would read lower, that would explain my oil usage problem very easily, without pulling it apart to look at the valve stem seals. would be a simple matter of too much oil.
(in which case, I've probably done a deal of harm to the seals regardless)

Top one is JZA 70, Bottom is JZX81.

Effective Length JZA70: Stick = 557 mm Tube = 490 mm

Effective length JZX81: Stick = 585 nn Tube = 530 mm

If you use a chaser tube and stick in a JZA 70 you will have 12mm less oil height. If you swap back the other way you will have 12mm too much.

Dipstick Eff length is from the tip to where it seats on the dipstick tube.

AHhh Found it!
Now just to make sure, I have a front sump using the JZZ30 rear sump dip stick, am I right in asuming that this will indicate 12mm too much oil?
Cheers
Ben

easier way is to just find out how much oil is needed for the motor you have

then its simply just a matter of measuring how much oil you are putting in Very Happy
