I would think that the brake test would be using the same machine as they use for the rego inspections...

Maybe this would also include an inspection and measurement of all brake components for the report anywayz...

I could say that the entire engineers report for $400 is good but the brake test alone for $400, I tend to think rip off... Have you been quoted for just the brake test anywhere else???

Depends, work it out.
A brake test SHOULD only cost the time.

Work it out on $100 per hour for an engineer.

Remember they won't break the law either.

My brake test is costing $200, as the nearest 110kph country road is about 40mins away.

So 40mins each way, plus time for the brake test = 2hrs = $200.

Ask them what they plan to do for the brake test.
My engineer is doing 2 successive 110kph emergency stops, and a 35kph handbrake test.
So it will take him about 10mins to complete.
Its the getting there and back thats the killer.

If they are charging $400 for a 10 minute test, that will take them 10 mins from the time you drop the car off, its a ripoff.

Sounds about right to Rex.

It all is related to the time and costs involved.

Figure it like this.

They may need arrange hire of an off street location for an hour or so. Or spend the time finding a place suitable (110kp\h zone out of the way).

Then cost of their time to do the test required and the time it takes to write and submit the report.

In SA there is something like 15 repeated hard stops from 60kp/h one after another to test fade. Then 2 from 100kp/h to test effectiveness. During the test the car must not fall under a certain g-force or have any undesirable characteristics or else it fails.

Engineering is a highly skilled profession, so expect the rate to be $100+ per hour.

FYI the rolling test at inspection is a bias test. The engineers test is an effectiveness/efficiency test.

Me neither till I read your post nick.
On another note I got all my brakes looked at and got new pads fitted on the front wheels for $135.
This is not to check them for being engineered though so it's a lot different.
