MA61 Steering Rack Sat, 11 December 2004 00:35 Go to next message
I think mine just shat itself. Started up the car this morning and got a horrible noise from the power steering. Backed it up and there was a big piddle under where the car was - it just dumped all the power steering fluid. Checked under the car, and one of the rubber boots is hanging off the steering rack, so I'm guessing this is my problem. Anyone offer a better diagnosis?

I've been quoted $150 for a second hand steering rack. Anyone know how much it is to reco one, and where it can be done in Sydney?

Cheers.

The boot can be torn and yet the rack wont leak. However the seal may have died and PS fluid pissed out.

Another scenario is that a line split and leaked.

The noise was probably your PS pump out of fluid.

Cost me $480 from a joint in meadowbank, that was handing them the rack.

Yeah I knew the noise was the power steering pump out of fluid. I knew the second it started up - I've heard it before Sad

As for the leak, it seems to be a fairly slow leak, so hopefully one litre of p/s fluid will get my by, topping it up, until I can get a new rack. Even if it is a split line, I still want to get a new rack because I can see the boot is split Sad

$480 you say? Dang.

Actually, no its not, because aftermarket boots don't go big enough.

That said, as Glen said, it shouldn't be leaking even with a split boot.

Not aftermarket universal boots, aftermarket MA61 boots.

I just replaced all mine with new ones. I think it cost be $70 for all 3.

If they make them for MX73's, they should make em for MA61's

I tried getting aftermarket MA61 ones, and no one wanted a bar of it. The boot was massive compared to any of the universal ones.

I will ask if Odins can get aftermarket MA61 replacements when I go in next

It will be interesting to see if they can.

probably a damaged[split] hose. Identify the hose by cleaning the area then watching closely while someone else operates the steering.Once you have the hose spotted, remove it and get your mate to drive you to enzed or pirtek or similar who should fix it on the spot. Best to arrange it in advance so they are expecting you.If you can be bothered-might save some cash? Cheers.Pete. Smile

Sorry for the thread highjacking.
The MA61 Steering racks I have found to be quite bad.. they tend to start leaking based on two factors..

1st storing your car for a long period of time... (Will ensure a leaky rack and crack seals)

2nd Overheating fluid. (Believe it or not this has been the no one cause of rack failure for me... I good tip is to replace the factory "Heat tube" with some sort of transmission fluid cooler... There cheap and are worthwhile..

Anyone want to come around one weekend and help me fit a cooler for my steering rack fluid? Preferably someone who's done it already? Beer and pizza supplied!
