GOLD28 Wed, 15 December 2004 08:27 Go to next message
Well I was bored the other day and decided I would figure out how MS FrontPage works. Turns out it ain't all that difficult. So now that I have a web page for my RA28, I figured it was about time I made an entry into the members rides section of Toymods.

So here is my toy...

http://members.optusnet.com.au/gold28/images/photo%20shoot%20007.jpg

Model: Celica RA28 1977

Engine: 1G-GTE donated by a GZ20 Soarer
GA70 Intercooler
Bleed Valve Running 15-16psi at intake
Power at wheels 149kW

Paint: Not sure, supposedly it is from a S70 Volvo

Wheels: Remotec Borbets 16x7 Hand Polished
Tyres: Front - nangkang 205/45R16
Rear - Tornado 205/50R16

Gearbox: W58 Supra 5 speed

Diff: E series from a MX2?? Corona
Currently 3.9:1 Ratio

Suspension and Brakes: MA61 struts
RA60 Lower control arms and ball joints
MA61 calipers and discs up front
RA28 Drums at back
Springs and Shocks - don't know what they are

Interior: All pretty much the standard RA28 stuff retrimmed.
"wood grain" looking steering wheel and gear knob
Boost/Vacuum gauge where the clock was
VP/VR Commodore door map pockets/speaker pods
Custom backlit gauge faces (so I can actually see them at night)

Sound: Alpine CD player
Alpine 6inch splits for the front running off a V-net amp
2 MTX 15inch subs in the hatch running off a Alpine V12 Amp.

Here is my website if you want some more photos and info.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/gold28/index.htm

I do have more plans for the car, I wouldn't really be a toymods member if I didn't. Most of them set around improving on whats already there. I have some panel work that needs to be done, suspension upgrades planned, trim items changed, another diff upgrade etc etc.

Re: GOLD28 Wed, 15 December 2004 11:17 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I have camber nuts installed on the crossmember to push the lower control arms out a little, so at the current ride height I have slightly negative camber.

I want to put in some roll centre adjusters to get the front end geometry a little better, however these will bring the camber in to about +0.5 degrees when installed. I have some RA60 struts to put which will compensate for this. When I feel game enough to pull the front end apart again I might put them in. Man I hate working on suspension.

I want to change the crossmember to a TA23 so I can use my GZ20 sump (better set up than whats in it currently). When I do that, I will definitly install the RA60 struts and get rid of the camber nuts. I am sure they are contributing to a bump steer problem that i am having.

I took it out to Wakefield and it was really predictable to drive on the limit, so it can't be all that bad. It is just the daily driving where a little bit of bump steer and occasional vagueness that gets to me.

Yeah chrome would be nice but I am happy with 16in wheels. And the Borbets kinda suit the age of the car.

We should organise an all 28 photo shoot one day?

VERY NICE
i suggest one of 2 things for the rims though, either polish the current ones up to make them more shiny(without going to far)
or buy some polished alloy 17's

Yeah i did polish the rims (they were painted when I got them), but after spending about 5 or 6 hours on each rim, I really couldn't be bothered doing any more. These rims had a really rough cast surface (not machined) so it was a lot of work to get them where they are now. I really need to do the centre caps though, they were just paint stripped and put on.

Just when I start to get a couple of nice things said about the car, someone has to go and mention the B word.

Hopefully in the not too distant future my friend. Oh by the way Simon, do you have a front lip on that RA28 your wrecking?? I can't see me getting that GT one made up any time soon.

But this car is OLD SCHOOL! A classic!! You can't go putting wheels like that on one of these, IMO it just won't suit..

As Anthony says.. "Old school class with new school ass" Smile

Lucid is right i think the car is mad but you cant put rims like that on his car because the gold colour is a vintage look. but on the other hand if it was yellow of metalic blue you could put 19inch chromies on it and it wouldnt look half bad.

Yeah I have nothing against chrome wheels, most of the expensive wheels in the 70's were chrome anyway. But I am happy to stick with 16's any bigger just looks rediculous on an old car.

I am rather partial to the wheels in your avatar though Eagz.

The speaker pods/map pockets just screw onto the door trims. The only problem is that they are fairly shallow, so it was either a matter of cutting the door to accomodate the speaker magnet or mount the speaker on top of the pod.

I am not totally happy with them but it is a very easy option if thats what you want.

I have added a page to my web site that details some roll centre measurements for the front suspension on the celica. It shows how the roll centre moves around with and without RCA's fitted. Now all I need to do is fit some RCA's. Rolling Eyes

http://members.optushome.com.au/gold28/RCA.htm

Stay tuned for a page on my rear suspension modifications. Razz

And just for the 1G know it alls, I am currently running 19psi on the standard ecu and turbo's. Thus there is definitly no boost cut, just the end of the AFM travel.

Yeah the funny thing is it hasn't reached "boost cut" yet.

Tell me what you think of this Rod.

The gen3 cut at about 16psi

I currently have the old gen2 block in it with all the gen3 externals on it (turbos, loom, ecu, AFM, sensors etc) This "gen 2.5" is running at 19psi and not a hint of cutting out.

This engine isn't quite as responsive as the gen3 and it doesn't feel any faster at 19psi than the gen3 at 15psi.

I am thinking that the cam profile and timing is different between the two engines and consequently the gen2 needs to swallow a lot more pressure to get the same airflow through the AFM (and I guess the same power).

Any ideas?
