6M Crank vibration !! Fri, 01 November 2002 08:02 Go to next message
Basically with the engine running you can hear a damn awful noise of something spinning loose under the bonnet. After closer inspection it can be seen that the crank / pulley are vibrating horizontally as they rotate. The noise and vibration is becoming progressively worse.

So what i would like to know is:

how much driving time do i have left before it lets go?

Is it a big end bearing? If not what is it?

Will i require a new 6M crank? Rolling Eyes

How easy is it to fix these things yourself?

How much am i looking at for a bottom end rebuild?

thanx guys.

Glen.

mate, try tightening the large bolt in the middle of the main crank pulley. make sure the pulley is located in its keyway on the crank first (most likely is) and just see if that bolt is loose.

come back if you try that and it doesnt work Smile

cheers
ed

Apparently a common problem on the 5/6MG. DO NOT continue driving with the pulley like this......
Take off pulley, and you will see a little key in the crank. This will be half shagged. Remove and replace with a new one (engine reconditioner should be able to supply you with one for a minimal fee). Inspect keyway in crank pulley...this may be shagged too. If so, replace. The crank pulley bolt should be replaced with a new one as this is the source of the problem. Something about overtightening the bolt, stretching, followed by eventual loosening.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Dave.

thanx for the responses guys!

Im on study break before uni exams so i know that if i touch the car i will get ZERO study achieved!

so i dumped it at the mechanics and turns out you were both right in a sense.

It had a similar noise when i first bought it, so they tightened the bolt on the pulley, so theres ed's one.

But it is now making this noise again so Dave they are very much in agreeance with ur diagnosis.

Hopefully the crank pulley isnt rooted otherwise that may cost a bit to source!

ta again guys!

Will keep you posted!

Bugger. Sounds like damage is really bad.
Essentially do as suggested.....new key, pulley and bolt, Loctite it together, pray (a lot and to every known deity) and start looking for a new motor.
The crank may possibly be repaired but not whilst it's still in the car/engine. Much cheaper to get new 6MG.
Sorry to hear about it.

yeah

been informed that the crank can be reparied but has to be removed

there was another option. Dad mentioned ferropro or another product similar that may be used to fill the void

mechanic said the exact same thing as dave loctite it and hope for the best whilst looking aroundfor anew motor
