AE95 problem - Driveline related Tue, 04 January 2005 05:55 Go to next message
Took the ae95 4wding on the long weekend and found it to be a fairly capable 4wd'er apart from the lack of ground clearance.

Anyway, after a few sand dune runs, i hear a thud noise. i get the car towed out and back on a hard track and realise the car is only driving the rear wheels with diff lock on and there is NO drive at all with diff lock turned off.

any ideas what it could be?
centre diff?
broken driveshaft?
broken front diff?

cheers

if it only has drive when diff lock is engaged then perhaps centre diff is gone, or some problem with transferring drive to front (ie broken axle??).
would it be when centre diff is unlocked it provides all drive to the axle that is easier to spin?? (ie open wheeler) if an axle is broken then no power transfers to wheels. it will just spin broken axle with all engine power going to easiest wheel.
(ae95 doesnt have LSD, i am assuming)

as soon as you lock centre diff then drive has to be forced to rear wheels causing drive, but if diff had choice it would just transfer all power to front.
does it make any loud noises when trying to drive with no diff lock??
im not 100% sure of operation and its been a while since i had to work on a 4wd and cant remember much of tradeschool days....but that maybe a cause.
at least you know its in front half, cause it still drives with the rear.

do a search of 4WD club forums or google.

talking about tercels once with a fellow in a 4WD club mentioned that this sorta thing is common on the AE95.

they might have some good info on it.

If you lose front driveshaft symptoms would be as you say.

Is AE95 front driveshaft boltted to gearbox or just slide-in?

it might be broken inside gearbox.

Center diff takes power out the tranny BEFORE front final gear and thats why you can drive even without front driveshafts Wink
